  1. Am now watching a DVD of the original series starring Roy Marsden set in the immediate post-WW2 period (demobbed Flight Sergeant with chips on both shoulders sets up a cargo airline). It's a treat for DC3 lovers and there is also a good variety of WW2 MVs.........Austin Tilly, Bedfords, Dodges, etc. Interestingly, a lot of these, while in running condition, are somewhat tatty which fits pretty well with their tired post-War demobbed condition in austerity Britain........they look more convincing than many of the immaculate glammed up show queens that you tend to see on films and TV now. Possibly indicates a combination of a fledgling historical MV movement where lots of cheap vehicles were still available and not much valued? Anyhow, it's a great show for spotting you favourite MV and not bad watching as a TV drama in its own right.

Just out of interest, why did you suddenly decide to watch a show that is over 30 years old ?

The reason I ask is I have just finished watching it on DVD after suddenly deciding out of the blue that I wanted to see it again after all these years ! :-D

I wonder if there has been something on TV, radio or in a magazine that mentioned Airline ?

The bit that I liked is that for a 'mainstream TV' show, it was actually quite well portrayed from the flying aspect with a fair bit of detail that I suspect would not be 'jazzed up' enough for modern viewing.

  2. I have a friend who lived there-- we used to get dinner at the Stow House of Pizza. I mean, I wouldn't go out of my way to get pizza there but it was acceptable.

Please post if you see more about it...

Apparently last nights meeting saw the Stow council having received a large amount of correspondence in support of the Collings Foundation but still the council refuse to budge or re-visit their original decision.

A more cynical person may think there was a financial incentive behind their stance...

The Collings Foundation are going to continue with what looks like a long battle.

  3. More to this than meets the eye (As usual).

Seems the proposed museum is in an area zoned for residential use & the Collings' people are trying to use local by-laws to get around it.

And the local council have tried to stop the Collings Foundation from flying from the airport using a by-law which although it does not permit the restriction of aircraft movements but they still tried to implement it as if it does.

The local council have now been told by the governmental aviation body that this is illegal and is not to be upheld.

You'd think Stow would grab the opportunity that the Foundation will bring with tourism etc as there's nothing else to go to Stow for !

There was a meeting last night but can't find any updates yet.

  4. Correct, I was too busy enjoying a last look at the two Lancs together to take much notice of the fighters, especially as Vera was leading the formation for once...:-D

The first Spit and Hurricane lined up and then the second.

Vera and the BBMF Lanc came taxiing right past us with the crews waving.

The Spits and Hurricanes took off and then Vera did but with full tanks she needed a longer run than normal and the BBMF had its tail up and was off the runway as Vera climbed out.

Makes you think what it would be like with a few tons of bombs added.

They formed up and then came straight over us which was a truly magnificent sight :-D

  5. Back at Coningsby now, apparently.

I notice the remaining displays on the BBMF list don't show 2 Lancs, though CWHM say they're doing Prestwick and Portrush.

They are doing the main shows but the crew are whacked.

Time differences, late evening practice, early morning practice, day after day of continuous flying has taken its toll.

  6. Just an update, speaking to a colleague last night who is actually working on the Merlin for the Canadian Lanc, it seems the Supercharger failed dramatically and two engines were made available - one from East Kirkby and one from the BBMF which is the one they have gone with but there are several differences between a Packard and a Rolls built Merlin which they are having to overcome.

  7. It was a wonderful sight.

I was invited to attend the ceremony at the site of the new Bomber Command Memorial Centre and so had the two Lancs, the Vulcan and the Hawk approach us from over the Cathedral, right over the top of us.

It was a truly wonderful day and so nice to get to meet people such as Johnny Johnson and many, many more veterans.

  8. The reason for the 2x Lancs and Vulcan on the 21st is the official turf cutting ceremony of the new Lincolnshire Bomber Command Memorial centre.

The day will see the first steps made into the construction of this new memorial dedicated to the crews of Bomber Command, followed by a flypast of the three aircraft.

  9. My guess would be that this one was a Krauss-Maffei as the auctioneer's most likely to have lotted it up from the W.D. paperwork or just from the badge on the front!

Coming at it from the other direction, I put this on an Axis vehicles forum. One of the guys there pointed out that an Sd.Kfz.7 was used by King George to review the troops in Germany soon after the war, and that the census number was very close to this one - H6246226 or H6246228 (it's not clear in the photo). Suggests that that number range was used for captured Axis vehicles or even just a batch of captured Sd.Kfz.7

As an additional bit of info, some Krauss-Maffei's ended up in Austria and converted to wreckers and also fire rescue vehicles.

I suppose in snowy/icey conditions they would have been fairly handy.
