  1. The Oshkosh PLS-HEMTT range of trucks. 500bhp V8 diesels with 6 speed auto,and bigger load capability.

     

    They dont have bigger load capacity as they have restricted capability x-country.

    500bhp with a 6spd auto will sap power....MAN has a modern 440bhp with a 12speed manual/auto. I have driven the PLS HEMTT and it is good x-country (with the weight limit though) but is very basic, not as comfortable to drive and other negative things as well.

    Old tat?? The MAN is nothing like what you are on about, i suspect the MAN KAT's of the 70's & 80's. The shape is similar but D20 440bhp engines, semi/auto gearboxes etc make it a different league to the MAN's of old. Name me another modern truck that can do what we ask the MAN's to do and ill discuss.:)

  3. Jonny, you are correct. JACKAL goes up-country into the wilderness....JACKAL needs to be resupplied but which veh does it at moment?

    So COYOTE is born to enable this resupply to take place.

  4. Another thing popular with Troops when Non Tac was to pour sand into an empty oil drum (About two foot high version) with the lid cut off. The pour about gallon & a half of Diesel into it. Then set fire with a match, lovely for warming hands & boiling water for a brew! Burnt VERY well as I remember! :-D

     

    It will burn well, but you have to initiate the burning process. Without a secondary fuel source it wont "set fire with a match". This will only happen if:

    a. The fuel temp is 54 degrees C (but less if Aviation Fuel is present)

    or

    b. You use a little Petrol etc to start it then the Diesel takes over.

     

    I know this as part of my job is amongst other things burning/boiling/evaporating fuel and the hardest fuel to "test" is Diesel.

     

    In fact, if you get a glass jar of Diesel on a day like today and put a lighted match in, it will put the flame out.

  5. Hi all.

    I have a Water Pump mounted Rover Gas Turbine and a bit of a problem.

    Up and till recently it used to run fine but after my enforced absence (abroad for 6 months) i cant get the thing started.

    I hasten to add its not the ones fitted with a starter motor so it involves hand cranking it to about 15000rpm (yes, 15 thousand!) and flicking the switch.

    It cranks over but at around 10000rpm the ignitor should start "clicking" at the pre-combustion chamber and it doesnt. I know its not a fuel problem.

    Now that it doesnt work i have become quite intimate with its workings. It is fitted with a Lucas Magneto, which i have managed to get checked and produces a good spark. My next area to check is the bit im not too sure about.

    This contains all the coils and condensers that produce the big spark to start it.

    There is a pic in the "best engine etc " thread of the pump, but ill attach a pic of the coil, condenser pack.

    Does anyone have any ideas what it could be, or does someone have one etc etc. Any help appreciated.

  6. Most impressive engine??...well i have an engine and its not quite an aero engine, but has something to do with aeroplanes, not a MV engine but went in a road vehicle and this actual engines life involved ships so i suppose it could be a marine engine....in the loosest term

     

    A Rover Gas Turbine IS60 water pump.

  7. More armoured lockers mean more weight, which then goes towards limiting the ability and mobility of the platform itself.

    Without getting into a pissing contest of diesel burning, at temp below 54 degrees C, diesel is actually quite hard to ignite, in fact it wont with the introduction of a spark. Anyone knowing the workings of a CI engine will tell you its the compression process of causing diesel to ignite etc. When the temp is really cold other processes to help this ignition process are the old EasiStart (bane of my life!) and glowplugs. In the new MAN vehicles we have fuel heaters etc.

    IF we were that worried about it, we wouldnt of bolted 2x205ltrs drums of diesel on the back of Challenger Tanks.:shocked:

  8. Slim chance that the Jerricans will go up. Diesel wont ignite that easily if a round hits it. Depending on the temp of the fuel. But dont forget most of those pics are showing the veh's in "PR" type poses. Whats carried on Ops may look different.
