Hi all ..thanks for the useful info....sunday i removed the fuel pump..it can be done without removing the tank...only had to remove the nearside battery box and the nearside engine mount...its a tight squeeze but can be done. ( i bin listening to the guys on ferret heaven saying it can only be done by removing the petrol tank!!)..anyway i digress...back to the plot...checked the diaphrams (all three of them).....no splits, tears, pin holes.....good as the day i fitted them(three months approx).I have re read the overhaul manual for the pump...it mentions using a glue(seccotine)on the fibre washer behind the diaphrams to ensure an airtight seal...i didnt do this on rebuild of the pump...could it be my leak is thru the center fixing plunger????......this time i used Blue hylomar to seal the fibre washer and the diaphrams.....didnt use seccotine....a) its ye olde fish based glue b) I didnt have any.
Today i emptyed the oil tank of 15 ltrs oily-petrol...refilled with new oil & filter.....started it up no problems...will keep you posted.
Ps Sunday i also fitted a repacement starter motor....it too can be done with out taking fuel tank out...also didnt need to dismantle exhaust system....just removed oil filter and dip stick tube...enough room to pull starter out.
regards Keith

Hi all
came to start ferret today.large patch of oil on floor at rear end..investigated....petrol in oil.....sump filled to overful....with petrol oil mix......oil pressure relief valve must have operated..question is is there any way this can happen apart from the fuel pump diaphrams splitting....i replaced the diaphrams 3 months ago with a NOS kit from Bannisters....took pump off today....diaphrams are intact....got me stumped...any ideas how the fuel came to fill the oil tank?

Hi Keith, I put this same question to the Ferret group sometime back and a member said it was the same disc setup as used in current fire suppression systems in race cars. I then asked the gentleman who services the fire extinguishers where I work and he said it was likely he could fill it but would have to see it first. That is as far as I have gotten with it. My guess would be that whoever works on it will will require an updated hydrostatic test to be sure the high pressure bottle is safe. Good luck. Regards, Bob
Thanks for the reply....i'll do some investigating along these lines and will share any info i get....cheers Keith

Hello all
can any one advise me if it is possible to get an original C02 extinguisher bottle replaced/refilled for Ferret.
I know the original bottle has a metal disc fitted that is pierced when the fire fighting handle(s) pulled....I have a standard 7Lbs C02 extinguisher fitted at the moment...i would like to fit original equiptment if poss...cheers in advance.

best fuel mpg 9/10 mpg top speed 50 ish 40/45 seems pretty fast though!!your not meant to tow anything with them , fluid flywheel overheating issues.:cool2:
Another aspect if your Ferret is manufactured before 1960 you will void your MOT exempt status...Form 112G section 30 states...
Motor vehicles first used before 1st January 1960, used unladen and not drawing a laden trailer
hope this helps...Keith

Just a quick note bout the two batteries you recently purchased.
I figured with my Ferret I would invest in two really good batteries, so I bought two Optima's (sealed spiral cell battery) and guess what, two weeks after installing, turns out I had a bad battery. A bit of a disappointment, but no problems in the last year with the replacements.
Good point...just because my batts are new doesnt mean they havnt gone faulty...will check them individually...hmmm now where did i put that warranty card!!
thanks for your input...Keith.

I've got this, it's not bad. It's a load tester, not much of a load but it has been useful in the past. for £23 is pretty cheap.

Looks like a neat bit of gear...will invest in one....cheers for the info...Keith

The first check should always be the batteries. They are the easyiest things to check before you even get any spanners out. Altough they may be new you may have left the intercom on and they have dropped some voltage.
Cheers Barry...i will check the batteries...Wont be the intercom or the interior lights left on as i have incorporated a battery isolator switch in one of the battery boxes.May be the Ferret isnt charging as i have had all the wiring out for a major restoration inside...i'll check to see if i'am getting the correct voltage input when the motor is revving and the alternator is putting out a good charge...cheers ...Keith

Thanks to you and Tony B for the info....i'm off to Maiden Newton at war w/e so wont be able to check till next w/e......hope its not the Batteries...as i have installed two brand new huge Varta batts....i hope its not the ring gear....here's hoping its just a sticking starter motor...neat tip for checking the ring gear..i'll do just that..cheers Keith

Hi All...I have a prob with my starter motor...ever other start or so there is loud vibrating noise coming from starter motor area and engine will not turn over....after a few trys it starts...full speed cranks over...engine starts almost instant....only started doing this this last w/e...at the Weymouth Vets parade...most awkward.....but started ok eventually....any ideas?...i have a spare starter motor.been sitting around for a few years...looks like new inside..no brush/commutator wear...what needs doing to it to maintain it ...i.e lubrication before fitting....any help most appreciated...Keith

Brave man driving that far as a first time ferret driver (although as they say...very fine line between bravery and....well, maybe I won't go there, you look bigger than me )
Hi Mike ..i hear what your saying...and your quite right.... a little knowledge is dangerous....when i think back i cringe to think what could have gone wrong....but as the saying goes the sun shines on the righteous...so i must be doing something right ...lol

Welcome fellow Ferret owner Keith from another owner, but in Canada or kanader if I follow your spelling cue!
Just a tip about your fuel tank, be sure to switch over to the reserve side on a regular basis so as not to develop crud over there and also to make sure you keep the tank full as the condensation factor can be great on such if left outside.
I guess you must be employed as a civil servant or have won the National Lottery to be able to afford such long road trips based on UK fuel prices, or maybe you dont have kids!
regards
Robin
Hi Robin, thanks for the welcome and thanks for the info re the fuel tank..i will remember to cycle the fuel tap to use the fuel in the reserve.as for the cost of long UK road trips ...your right you need to win the lottery or have very rich inlaws....unfortunatly i have neither..lol.....240 miles cost me about £160....i was quoted over £500 to have the ferret lowloaded home.....the long drive was the only option...was great fun tho....regards Keith

The ferret was based in Ruislip, Middlesex. I'll check before I pass on his phone number but I don't think it will be a problem. Best of luck with it
Barry
Hi barry Thanks for the info....your right about the ferret purring.... i drove it down from the midlands last year...non stop (apart from fuel stop)......only conked out once ...due to the B60 sucking the tank dry....i was still running on average car mpg mentality.....was the first time i had driven a Ferret too...so hopefully i can be excused for my lack of knowledge...was a real blast tho....Keef

Hi Keith,
One of my friends owned that ferret until about 2 1/2 years ago. Its good to see it again we wondered where it was now. He had many great years with it, and it was a very reliable vehicle and purred like a kitten. Best of luck with it, and maybe we'll meet at Horndean
Hi Barry
Hope we meet at Horndean....just look for the Ferret....thats ifn i get it completed.....been off road all this winter for Restoration ( interior anyway)..would be good to chat to a previous owner ( any chance of his phone number?....that is if he would like to chat about his ferret)...did he by any chance live in the Portmouth area?...as that is where the previous owner bought it from.
Kind regards
Keith

correct - a common fault, not seen one that can be removed with disassembling the bracket from the hull, great design.
one US owner has bent the front lip of the holder outwards which just gives enough angle to get the screen in/out under the hull armour
I had the same prob with my screen holder not possible to fit with felt in...had to remove one peice of felt...fitted fine...will pack out at the front with a sutable peice of material to stop rattling....after all i'm only going to fit it once as its a spare and not likely to get used.. regards Keith H
