Hi Mick, I have recently acquired a DAF which seems a quantum leap in terms of driveability, certainly compared with the Morris MRA1 and Commer Q4 and Bedford MK. I would be interested to know why you rate the MJ above the DAF as I have heard that comment from others. My big problem is the height of the beast as I cant get it in my shed. I hadn't appreciated that the cargo body is mounted on large spacers/mounts on top of the chassis frame which adds about 4 inches to the overall height.

I got my DAF about a month ago and I'm really chuffed with it, its in good condition with everything working apart from:

The horn - Turned out to be a corroded spade on the horn itself.

Cab tilt alarm sounded as soon as I went off-road - Had to adjust the lockdown switch position.

Diff lock light not illuminating - Blown dash bulb.

There is some rust in the side rails by the rear mudflaps but it's an easy repair.

The speedo works but not the odometer, its weird as it looks like it's missing, it should be a small LCD display in the main speedo but looking closely in the window where it should be you can see the back pcb of the speedo.

I could also do with a new top canvas.

It's fun driving it off road, its already pulled my van out when I got it stuck on my track in the mud.

Overall height of mine is 11' 6" according to the cab display, that's with frame and canvas.

After reading the Commercial Motor article, it seems to me that the changes would apply to vehicles being used commercially. My Leyland Daf 4 Tonner fitted with a Radio Repair body is registered as a Motor Caravan and it goes through a large class 4 Mot each year, this truck has been inspected by VOSA when they still had testing stations, and by someone that I was chatting to at Wicksteed at War, who turned out to be a DVSA examiner, both were happy that the camper conversion was in line with the criteria set down for motor caravans.

Some people seem to waste a lot of time and effort to get MoT exemption, my personal opinion is that it is worth paying a few quid a year for the peace of mind that the brakes etc are up to scratch.

Any pictures of your Leyland Daf 4 tonner? I'm a new owner of one, just waiting for my registration documents to come back.

  3. An O ring stretcher?

Close the 2 jaws, slid on an O ring then close the shaped half to stop the O ring pinging off.

Squeeze the handles, place the opened ring over a shaft and then release.

    (Just a guess).

  4. I've just bought a Leyland DAF 4X4 4 tonner, it's unregistered but it has it's blueCast Form (MOD 654).

As I understand it to get it road legal I need to do the following:

Insure it on its chassis number.

Book appointment and drive to plating centre.

Fill out V55/5 and send to DVLA with copy(?) of Cast Form with appropriate fees.

Once registration is finalised change insurance to registration number.

    Tax the vehicle.

    Does that sound right?

I've put a question mark next copy of Cast Form as I'm not sure whether DVLA needs to see the original or not.

    Cheers.

  5. I've bought a DAF 4 tonner, should be low loaded down to me next week.

I checked it over on purchase and the jack is missing from the toolkit.

I'd like to get the correct replacement rather than a generic jack, anyone have a picture of the jack supplied with this vehicle or know of one for sale?

  6. I've owned mine for 7 years and it has been an excellent truck, I've only had to do routine maintenance and haven't had any issues. I bought mine from Dave Crouch who did an 'on the road' deal, downrated to 7.5 tonnes, MOTed, registered etc.

he rang me when it was ready then I just paid the money and drove it from Liecestershire to Wiltshire.

Cheers for that, I will give them a ring and see what they've got.

  7. Hi, my name is John and after surviving 50 years on this planet I am going to treat myself and buy a Leyland DAF 4x4.

I own a woodland and meadow perched on top of the Quantock Hills accessed by a long and steep track and a DAF would be ideal for transporting stuff up and down.

Ideally I'd like one with sides and canvas and the truck itself to be in reasonably good order, annoyingly the dealers selling them seem to be at least a 3 hour journey away with Hamptons in Newcastle Under Lyme and Longton 2012 in Stoke On Trent looking to be the closest place to Somerset.

Anyone own one on here, pitfalls to look out for?
