  1. if you look around you can pick up British units capable of taking side lights ( motorcycle ?) this would allow you to keep your blackout lights as per original, instead of converting them to side lights as many do.. also the pattern on glass on british shells means the headights will dip to the left as per English mot requirements. you can fix butler sidelights discreetly ( under front edge of wings ?) as indicators with a little modification of electrics including in line fuse...cheers, Mike

  2. I would think that 8amp wire would be OK for connecting the coil to the points in the dissy. I don't know the resistance of your coil, but it should be about 3ohms, assuming it's not a modern electronic type, so it will only draw about 4amps when the points are closed.

The points are only closed for about one-third of the time, so the average current would be not much more than 1amp. Also, the current takes some time to rise to the maximum, because the coil is an inductive load - but you probably don't want to know that:nut:

The main thing is, your 8amp wire should be fine - make sure the terminals are crimped on nice and tight!

hi and thanks. my coil is an original 12v autolite.which reminds me ... what is the terminal on the bottom of my spare 12v autolite coil for, ? is it for an earthing strap ? .dont know if there is on the one fitted to my wc, cant remember , will check that out tomorrow ! thanks again , cheers, mike

  3. hi, had problem with my dodge. its a wc42 and was already converted to 12v with the big dynamo [ by the army?] when i got it off a farmer in scotland in 1991. ive rebuilt the dodge completely including 12v regulator,12v starter and new custom made cotton covered , colour coded wiring loom from the states. . its always started o.k. but last time i went to it it would not start.no spark at points. eventually after changing plugs, points and condensor i found the problem was the lead from coil [ 12v autolite] to dissy. one of the terminals had failed and parted inside the sleeve. the wire was a brown colour not shiny copper colour. resistance ? must have been on its way out for a while!. i have bought modern pvc sleeved 8 amp wire as a temporary solution and crimped the terminals on. my question is can anyone tell me in laymans terms is 8 amp wire o.k. or should it be higher or lower ampage for this application. is it possible to use too heavy a guage wire ,or would it work as long as it can carry the ampage requiered ?. in other words is heavy wire ok even on applications that only need a lighter amp wire. is there any simple way i can check out the terminals on the rest of the harness ? because someone has implied to me that the whole harness could be suspect!!!. it is a harness made to carry the ampege for a 6v volt set up in case i ever converted a to 6v system at some point in the future. any advice would be appreciated. cheers, mike

  4. After finding a few head gaskets today , i was wondering which is the better one to use . Either the copper one or a gray composite looking one ? Cheers guys :cheesy:

could the gray composite possibly have an asbestos content,?!! better stay away. cheers, mike

  5. on duxfords website it states land warfare and hangar 3 shut 1 nov till 18 march might pop up this weekend

  8. joined the m.v.c.g. as it was then in 1979 .[ do you remember the mailed fist logo and the silly controversy about it. ? ] i have been a member ever since. i have now got my bronze , silver and gold m.v.t. badges. this was the year i bought my g.p.w. and although i now own a dodge wc 42 , i will always have a soft spot for the jeep and cannot understand why some people ridicule them .like many other post war baby boom kids i grew up with a leaning towards the history of the war our parents had just endured. airfix kits ,kellys heroes etc ,all added to my military influences

  9. Hi,

I'm particularly interested in Camouflage markings . Mont'y's jeep ( shown in the wartime jeep in british service) show's what looks like a random 2 tone colour scheme, but I've also seen some others with " mickey mouse" pattern.

I'm looking to repaint my jeep in British colours. Anyone recommend a good book with colour photos or have original photos I could see?

jeeps look great in british markings. when i had a jeep i did it as british. first as a jeep in burma then as a 2 commando jeep, my dads old mob.

  10. hi tony. welcome. long time no see. i remember the gateway pub too. we had some characters there didnt we. some like yourself still around, some like a.k. [ THE jeep man ] and dennis sadly no longer with us. i still have newspaper cuttings of your k2 at the school show. enjoy this forum, its good, so much to look at. mike

  11. Hi Panelvan,

This seems to have started something - would you post the titles, author etc of the books that you refer to so I can see if I can find them for my own research?

the books i mean, are by andrzej antoni kaminski. there are a few of them ,but i only have 3. the titles are " od acromy do zwyciezcy ". the books are full of pictures of all sorts of vehicles used by the polish forces. the 2 wc42 pictures in this thread are taken from them. i think the publisher is "f.h.u. phantom s.c." i dont know if they are still available. i think i got mine from beltring a couple of years ago.

  12. loved the gmc pictures.i know that the polish forces used the dodge wc42 panel radio van. how would i get access to the pictures from the sikorski institute to see if i can find any photos of the wc42. i do have 2 small books of the polish forces vehicles which are very good. lots of pics, even 2 of the wc42 in service!

  13. thanks to those who responded. i would love to show the few pictures i have of wc42s but they are all italy/north africa and i dont know if i am allowed to show pictures due to copyright ? etc even if i knew how to .i have a wc42 and one day will finish it and paint it up. its on the road and legal but needs more work to finish it . maybe i could show photos of my wc42 on here icon5.gif:confused:

  14. hi,regarding the bfbs. thanks but i think the picture you may have seen shows a chevvy 1.5 ton radio van.i have seen such a picture taken in italy. i once spent a whole day looking through the all photos in the north africa/italy files of the imperial war museum to see if there were any pictures showing wc 42 radio panel vans. of the thousands of photos, i found only one ! but what a great way to spend a day....i would love to find more , but especially would like to know if this vehicle did serve in n.w. europe.
