I have to say I find the population of the Salient more friendly than around the Somme as well.
Me TOO ! Been invited for dinner a few times around there, many times been stopped by the locals and been shown great kindness !

I was offered a pair of 1917 dated rear Dennis Wheels today one with location for a spocket or something, have small brass date tag (1917) solid rubber tyres etc ! By a chap here in Tonbridge

Why the Somme ? In 2014 and not 2016 0n the 100th anniversary of that battle and part of the war, Surely Mons is the place to commerate the 100th anniversary of the Great War its also the year the Ypres Salient was formed ! Again that year was dominated by Horse Transport and Equipment
Just thinking out loud !

These are marvellous photos. Were many of the horse ambulances made? It is quite a remarkable survivor.
Hi Tim,
I know of one other in good state, one earlier one rotting in Surrey and one rotting away in a pub garden in Kent !
they survived as they were used as cattle carts by farmers after the war ,
Kind regards

I assume the same horse ambulance as in the RLC Museum?
Yes the very same !

I presume these were taken at Singleton last weekend 26/7 May? My parents were there with a small display of lead farm horse drawn and animals by Britains etc. My mum took a few pictures of the Military horse drawn but they didn't come out too good. They really enjoyed this display though, something different.
Yes this was where they were taken , kind regards

A certain International Australian show jumper used to win his beer money by jumping his horse over tractors. Till someone pulled out a Ford World master series. :-D Two Series 3 109's were part of a jump at the Burghley international horse trials a few years back. The hoop over the back of the Horse Ambulance is intresting. It is for slinging a horse if it has a leg injury and can't stand. I had a modified Rice trailer with a similar attachment. You need at least a three ton working load to deal with a big horse, allowing for the horse to kick and move.
Hi Tony
Thats exactly what it is for ,supporting the weight of the horse in transit

I have just been reading about your WW1 water Carrier on the BBC website and would be very interested if you would like to bring it to be on show at the weald & Downland open Air Museum in Sussex, We our hosting our ever popular Heavy Horse & Working Animal and this year we are delighted to have a War Horse themed area with contributions from a range of museums and groups: see below
War Horse
Over the weekend there will be a combination of spectacular World War One (WW1) themed presentations and re-enactment displays to include: Sealed Knot Enterprises, Mounted 16th Lancer display and Andrew Robertshaw, Curator/Manager of The Royal Logistic Corps Museum in Deepcut www.rlcmuseum.co.uk will be sharing his experiences as military consultant on Stephen Spielberg’s award winning film Warhorse. Alongside this there will be a rare opportunity to see a GS wagon and horse drawn horse ambulance in action pulled by the Museums horses. Experience the WW1 encampment and exhibition with displays of artefacts and wartime memorabilia. Also visit The National Army Museum’s trailer exhibition within the encampment area. www.nam.ac.uk/exhibitions/special-displays/war- horse-fact-fiction and a rare opportunity to see a 18 Pounder Gun in action, kindly on loan from Fort Nelson.
The event is on Saturday 26th & Sunday 27th May in Sigleton west Sussex. We would be happy to pay contributions towards expences. It would be great if you were able to atend as there are very few oppertunities for collections of these types to be deplayed together.the Tank water cart will be there too !
