  1. Another further question is:-

Was there a 2 gallon can manufactured exclusively for water ?

I ask this because I have a 2 gallon can that I have just been looking at which differs from most that I have seen in that it has neither any " Petroleum Spirit " markings or WD stamp but is stamped 3-40 underneath. It carries not the usual makers name (Valor) but " FF & S Ltd. There is also an eye on the neck of the can which seems to be for a cap securing chain and the cap is unmarked.

There is very little paint on this can but if I had to guess ,I would say that this can was originally brown but has been overpainted black with a silver top like the silver colour the "flimsies" seem to have been painted.

Could this can have been exclusively intended for water ?

Could this be a water can for the Vickers machine gun?

I'd suggest trying a post on the ARRSE forum,I made contact with my Land Rovers first driver through ARRSE.

  3. It costs nothing to advertise on milweb for non traders, so chancers put vehicles on there for stupid prices hoping someone with more money than sense will buy.

I'm not a trader but the last ads I submitted I received an email saying they would not be added unless I made them a photo ad,which there is a charge for. I could understand this for vehicles but for parts and a wanted ad?.

  4. There was a time when milweb was a great place to look for parts or vehicles but over the past few years it has changed and the varity of vehicles and parts offered is much less that it was, probably in part due to there being less free ads.

I don't think the MV market has declined, good vehicles are still selling for strong prices but there is a lot of over priced stuff about too and the number of WWII project vehicles coming onto the market has virtually dried up.

  5. Not wishing to open any worm filled cans but a question I have been thinking about for some time.

Considering the huge role soft-skin military vehicles played in WWII are they under represented in the national military museums? my feeling is they are but I would be interested in others thoughts.

  6. The truth is you are just as likely to see this kind of behaviour anywhere in the UK,people are so mobile these days theives can(and do) travel into other areas and often they seem to view more rural areas as easy pickings,it's easy to see why when my local plod admit it could take half an hour for them to respond to a 999 call.

  7. I will need to proof the canvas on my Land Rover before the winter and as it's rather faded I was looking at the proofer and colour restorer sold by War Paint/RR Services and I would welcome any tips or advice from others who have used it.

    Thanks,

    Matt.

  8. Hi Jamie,

I look forward to seeing the pics!. I don't doubt your uniform is genuine but US uniforms can be a bit of a minefield and some of the fake insignia now is getting very good. I should post some pictures of a small grouping I have to a tanker in the 13th Armoured which includes details of his Sherman "Berlins Fate".

    Matt.

  9. Hi Jamie,

The above is His Enlistment Record from The US National Archives database http://aad.archives.gov/aad/record-detail.jsp?dt=893&mtch=1&cat=WR26&tf=F&sc=24994,24995,24996,24998,24997,24993,24981,24983&bc=,sl,fd&txt_24994=35214897&op_24994=0&nfo_24994=V,8,1900&rpp=10&pg=1&rid=5551517

I have checked a couple of other databases and it appears he survived the war. If they printed one you might be able to find a copy of the 747th's Unit History, ebay US is probably your best bet.

The uniform sounds like a nice find! although I collect uniforms I'm always very warey of those at shows as so many have been made up,had patches and ribbons added etc,but it sounds like you have a good one!.

    Matt.

  11. The belly landed a/c is a PR Mk XI from 14 PR Squadron, USAAF. Tail number is PA944. As it has invasion stripes painted on, this is a good dating indicator.

Thanks for the info. Spitfire Mk XI PA944 14th Phoro Recon Squadron,7th Photo Recon Group, landing accident at Mount Farm(the 7th PRG's base) on 12th September 1944,the pilot was John S.Blyth and the aircraft suffered catagory 3 damage.

    Matt.

  12. A number of USAAF units were equipped with Spits at one time or another, both Eighth and Ninth Air Force. It's a shame we can't see the tail number to find the when and where for the top pic.

    Matt.

  13. Some nice pictures, thanks for posting!. I must do an update on mine now we have it running, still need to get the clutch working and after having the fuel pump rebuilt the carb now needs doing, sodding modern fuel!.

Hopefully there will eventually be enough demand for tracks to make having reproductions made viable.

    Matt.

  14. It would be a shame to see these end up as scrap. I see one of still has the star visible on the front,I wonder if any unit markings survive? so few WWII vehicles have a known wartime history it would be an even greater shame to loose one if indeed the unit markings are on it.

  15. Note the allied star is not quite lined up. I don't think that my Dad who is at the wheel would be too concerned.

Those of you who are familiar with American vehicle used by the RASC; What is the wagon ?

I seem to remember reading that at least some allied units did this deliberatley to differentiate from US units, maybe Hanno can add detail?.

On the subject of finish, there is at times I feel a tendency blame a poor finish on "oh they just used whatever was laying around",perhaps this was true in some cases but if that's the case why did most Armies go to the trouble of printing detailed instructions on the painting and marking of vehicles?. As for factory finish just look at the quality of the finish on NOS parts,is it any less than that of a civilian vehicle? most of the auto companies producing vehicles during WWII had a reputation for quality with the vehicles they produced for the civilian market, why would they cut corners for the military contracts?.
