  1. The M-20 was used by a Steel power pole erection company in the 60's and the frame was the pully system for the Gin pole rig that was mounted on the front. Inside the crew compartment is a 10000 LB. winch that was used to pull up the poles. All that is going to come off and out. The look of the winch looks like the same on my CCKW that wasin the video. After I get it out of the M20 I'm going to go over it and check it out but it look like a Hiel winch.
  2. Well I finially got the M-20 free from her resting place for the past 40 years, and she is now in her new home safe and sound. And now the real work starts..... Here is the video on the adventure. Enjoy. :-D http://www.youtube.com/WWIIvehicles No vehicles were harmed in the making of this movie....
  3. Enigma, Where abouts what battlesite or what town do you live in?
  4. Jack, I had a problem kind like this with one of my Kenworths awhile back. Like I had stated I would have "issues" with cranking on wet or humid days. If I slaved or jumped the truck it would start and be fine afterwords.... But I was 24 volts at the batteries. Finially came a day where she had nothing, low power to accessories but no crank. I started at the batteries. All showing 13.2 volts checked all the battery cables and replaced all the had corrosion in the wire itself under the coating. Nothing.... I then started tracing the main harness from the battery box unbolting the harness and pulling it from the casing. (a 264" wheelbase semi tractor) Finially I found the spot, in a place where the case and the protective coating had split under the 66" sleeper and all the roadsalt from winter roads had found its way into the wire... A 5/8 inch power wire was totally green from corrosion and under the green all the wires were broken except 1 strand in the middle, still connected. So all the corrsion was a huge resistor and finially when there way only 1 strand intact there was not enough surface area on that strand to push enough voltage thru to crank that 575HP caterpillar diesel. This is more than likely your problem, start tracing your main harness..... This will suck but once you find it you can butt connect repair the bad area. Make sure you soldier all the connections and shrink wrap the repaired area and the brush on more paint on wire coating over the shrink wrapped area to keep mother nature out. Good Luck.
  5. Have you tried pulling the starter? I'd pull the starter motor and give it a bench test..... Sounds like it tried to crank, and something shorted and it died. This giving you a constant draw/short and no voltage. If that tests ok then I would check the starter switch. A faulty harness you have given you problems before hand, like a no crank once and awhile, (like when very humid) and needing a jump to start..... I had a situation like this with my Kenworth..... My two cents.... And if worse come to worse there is always the hand cranks start method. (hope you dont have a winch)
  6. Your UAZ the gas version or the turbo diesel? I got to drive UAZ's around the FOB's in Iraq. I really liked the diesel, great little trucks and I would'nt mind having one to bop around town in. Oh Yeah, Welcome!!!
  7. Well I've worked with Brit Para's, Gurkha's and Aussie in my military adventures, and I've earned my Aussie jump wing's... So I've got a bit of the lingo down.... But I might need a "terp" once and awhile. "No worries mate". Just wish is could find an importer that imports Beamish Red Ale here in the States...... And where is the NCO Club?
  8. Well, it was a productive day today. The fenders and skirts are off, and came off with less aggravaition than expected, but still a pain. Got the break adjusters loose and the break shoes to back off where they were frozen to the drums. And amazingly the tires all took air and are holding.... All of this done in 97 degree temp's, no shade and the lovely smell of a bloated dead cat 5 feet away from the M-20. (I think the snakes got it) And I found out that fire ants were living under the flat spotted tires on the M-20, and were really upset with me when I inflated the tires...... So the one hand I had on the ground while working got bit up before I knew what was happening.... A nice buring itch that lasts for hours..... I dont think you have them over there do you? You are really missing out if you dont!
  9. Gladly, right now the M-20 is in the recovery stage. I've pulled the fenders and skirts off her, and I sprayed down all the break adjusters with PB Blaster and let them soak. The breaks are frozen to the drums and the vehicle is frozen where she's parked for the moment. I may have to pull a driveshaft to get her rolling as all the shift linkages are frozen as well so the tranny won't shift. Not looking forward to crawling under the M-20 if I have to, as I have already come across a few snakes that are living under and around her. Being in a confined space on my back with snakes crawling around is not "High on my list" of fun things to do. I also forgot to mention the CCKW and the Ben Hur both came from your side of the pond. My CCKW is from Norway and the Ben Hur from Belgium.
  10. I've posted a picture of my CCKW with Ben Hur trailer in tow in the "American Vehicles" section. Along with a picture of my M-20 in the yard that was her hiding place for 40 years.
  11. I'm a new member to the site and was asked to see pictures of my vehicles. So here is my 1945 GMC with 1943 Ben Hur trailer in tow. And my newest purchase of last week, My M-20 Armored Car restoration project.
  12. Just want to say "Hi" from across the pond. Been checking in from time to time but recently got registered to your forum. I'm an active duty 82nd Airborne paratrooper, green collar professional with over 14 years on Airborne status. And way too much time over in the sandbox. I do Living History displays for the 82nd War Memorial Museum on Ft Bragg, NC. as well as a couple other local museums. And many other unit and Army functions on Ft Bragg. My hobby is military history, mostly WWII armor and (the 82nd for some reason). I have a 1945 GMC CCKW 353 WW and M36 Gun Ring mount. 1943 Ben Hur trailer. a 1944 MB jeep which was my 1st MV project but got pushed aside when I got the CCKW. And Now has been pushed to the back burner again as I recently aquired a 1944 Ford M-20 Armored Car. This will take a couple years as its been forgotten for 40 years and will need lots of TLC. But I'm looking forward to this project and look forward to getting her up and running. Thank's.
