  1. Finally got the bulkhead top sorted out and dry fitted, starting to really look good now.

Also decided to use Tommo's colour of khaki, it looks about right on this, now to get the rest  stripped and painted, including stripping body off to finish and make steel brackets for reinforcevent.

    Hi Dan,

The Dennis two ton flywheel is 16" od, so it would probably work for your purpose. I don't know how similar the Halley flywheel/clutch is to the Dennis but I am sure we can arrange another casting if required. The flywheel & clutch has worked out to be one of the most expensive parts of this build; including lining and all materials it has probably worked out around 800 pounds. It looks like you may be able to machine the flywheel yourself so that might save you 200 pounds.

Hi Ben, sorry for not replying sooner, I think that would do perfect as the 18"od was the largest od I could get into the gap, so this is probablyabout right.

I am definitely interested in  a set, i just have to raise up money for it.

  3. Hi all, sorry I haven't replyed to each post singularly, and thankyou all who have replyed.

I have done some more to the truck but progress is slow, the steering box is now only needing the key ways machining and setting up drag arm, then that is another part finished.

I have also been doing some more bits on the engine, and have been kindly allowed to borrow an engine frame to be able to rotate it to work on the con rod development.

I have also managed to sort out the final part for the bulk head, so now it really is looking more or less what it  should.

I will soon be looking into the hoop sticks as they hold the head board in position, I am thinking on just rolling the rad on them rather than welding rad sections into the sides.

Also, I will be looking into trying to make or get made a bonnet for it as that completes the look of the truck, everything else is hidden underneath.

  4. Hello all, so been starting to look more into engine and started to make parts to replace original parts and missing bits, plus also so other details for engine.

Have also started to strip down , inspect and clean gearbox.

One of my next jobs is to make a frame to hold the engine to allow me fit parts above and below.

I am hoping to fit the crank and cylinders so I can make a wood con rod, to check tolerances and final details before I make the pattern.

I have also machined the replacement water jacket covers for the cylinder tops and made up the bolts to hold it, so next pattern then is the water pipe to the header tank and side fittings to water pump.

Also, over the weekend I managed to borrow a masdive milling machine to skim the sump casting as it was twisted from having a crack welded up, so that is nearlly finished.

Also after a long time, the steering box is finished and fitted, everything works when the wheel is turned, so now a few small jobs to finish on that system.

I am hoping to have engine somewhere near running for end of January latest, whilst working on other parts to keep progress going else where.

Updates coming soon, peace and love (\,,/)

  5. Hello all, sorry for the lack of progress reports, as David said, things this past year have been very "interesting" as a result truck progress has been minimal, but to all your delight I have some progress to update.

So with much ecitment I am happy to show and tell you all about it.

The truck has been away the past few weeks, at a friends place having the cab and woodwork done, I decided to delegate some of the tasks to help push the project forward, I have also been machining parts for the engine, and chassis.

Also with many many many thanks, I finally have a gearbox, this is from an Albion A10 and will do perfectly till I make the original, time and money being a massive factor

And finally, after one of our friends being a draftsman in his working carer, he drew up the steering gears and they are now being produced, so I am really looking forward to getting this fitted up and see if everything works out how I planed.

I am now pulling out all the stops and have a dead line to finish my truck, latest is first week in may 2k18, this is a tall order considering some obstacles at this end, but will do my very best to meet this.

Now time for the wall of photos, ENJOY :)

  6. These old engines run very low compression ratios. I would be tempted to just run as-is as long as there is still a decent bearing surface.

Or you could try the Belzona to make yourself feel better, but make sure you never check that it is still there, as I am pretty sure it won't still be after a few miles.

Morning Andy, i looked at the instructions ( i know, thos is rare) and the temp range isn't that good tbh, from what i remember it said it's running temp was about 100°c.

So your prob right in saying, it will all be out after a few runs, but maybe replaced by carbon and oil :)

  7. Hi Dan, I suspect that the temperatures might go way beyond the limits of Belzona, and it is a pretty tough environment in the cylinder with its pressure waves, combustion, scraping and so on.

However, if you happened to know someone with a similarly pitted engine of no particular value that you could try it on, I would be interested to see the results. :)

    trevor

Morning Trevor, i only thought of this after talking to my brother in law, who works on the Bluebell railway, he said they have a loco with bad blow holes in tge cylinder bore, so to keep it going, the put belzona in it, he said its still going strong aftwr many years of working.

So i was keen to see if anyone had tried with a petrol engine.

Thanks anyway, and if i do decide to do this, i will report my findings in here as and when i remove the cylinders during its running life.

  8. Hello rusty followers, has anybody used belzona to fill in pitting inside a cylinder bore?

I have had the cylinders machined out to match the 0.040 over sized pistons, but the pitying in one cylinder is still queit bad, i don't want to fit liners if i can help it for one cylinders sake, so was wondering if anyone has done this and if it was a sucsess?
