  1. Ah yes the diesel will be better on fuel especially the tdi.

But the noise of a tdi in a un soundproofed 110 is amazing, if you thought the series 3 was noisy the diesel takes the cake your ear drums will ring.

In fact that's why the tithonus land rovers were fitted with the acoustic mating due to HandS rules over noise.

If I was you I would sound proof the bulkhead bonnet floors etc basically to the level of the civi boingys.

Unless you like the noise which some people atcually do.

    It's looking good though.

Been a busy day really today because it was a bit shorter for me than usual. Imagine my surprise when I woke up this morning to see the start of daylight creeping through the side of the curtains it left me a tad confused because it is normally pitch black when my body tells me it's done with sleeping so I turned to look at the little digital clock on my left that informed me it was 3 minutes past seven in the morning...that meant I had slept for about nine hours straight last night something that I have not done for years and I felt surprisingly refreshed instead of that beaten up slept too much groggy feeling you normally get from too much sleep.

I lay there relaxed and at peace with myself and the morning lay ahead of me I realised I had no desperate need to do much of anything at all. The day lay ahead and we had made no plans so I decided to be really naughty after my lie in and drag that relaxed feeling out by getting up ignoring my clothes throwing on my dressing gown which got a knowing look off of the dog who was waiting for me to take her out that that was not going to happen and then headed downstairs to stick the kettle on and not do much of bugger all. What a way to start the day nice and relaxed not rushing off anywhere after a great nights sleep I could get used to that!

So after a brisk walk in the woods with Wifey I decided to at least have a bit of a go at the 110 starting with getting the front end of it off of the ground to make working on it a bit easier...

www?ShowFile&image=1446404757.jpgThe offside wing needs to come off so I can start repairs on the bulkhead there on the door pillar then onto the foot well but before any of that can happen the wing needs to go so first things first the wheel came off which showed me yet more rust in places I had not noticed on the witches hat/suspension turret which is scrap as is the shock absorber...

Surprisingly enough the spring looks ok but seeing as I have to strip the rest off I will refit it all with a 2" lift all round not because I will be off roading it a great deal but just in case I do!

With that decided I set to removing the rubber arch enough to be able to get to the blots holding the wing on...

www?ShowFile&image=1446405353.jpgI managed to get all of those rusty buggers out eventually and it is now all set bar a couple of screws to come off and away showing me the full extent of what lies ahead but why leave it there I hear you ask? Well the beef roast was coming on and the light was fading fast so I decided to end the day the way I had started it...relaxing.

Only just came back to this and read that you sold the series 3.

I hope you don't think that 110 be any more refined than the s3 cos military 110 and 90 s are just as bare bones and raw😊

Ive been in your position before and the only way to get the vehicle you want is to perservering with one and build it up.

I would bin that na and put a tdi in its not a complicated job and will make it infinitely more use able.

The na will be slower than the s3 belive it or not☺

  3. Could anyone I'm the know help me understand something?

What is the difference between VPK and HV VPK?

What is the difference between the VPK, HV VPK and the Piglet?

Also what we're the differences between all of the land rovers I have just stated and the Hotspur Land Rover?

And as a side note the Snatch Land Rovera were developed for northern Ireland so why then we're Tangi Land Rovers Also developed?

  4. it may sound daft but a few weeks ago a customer brought his landrover in saying it lacked power after checking all

the usual things we found that when the choke was pushed in it was not returning the choke lever to the off position fully

    its worth a thought

Nope that is a very good point, ex mechanic here and the amount of times someone would bring their relatively old vehicle in saying "its starts when its cold but when it warms p it dies and wont re start until it cools down, it must be something major and i realise you are rushed off your feet but please diagnose this, call me, deliver the vehicle back to me and then ill take you back in the loan car you are going to give but im afraid i just simply cannot be seen in something as common as a nissan micra!".

At which point you puff your cheeks out and say "Sir could i just show you what this little plunger here does that you insist of pulling all the time":)

I will check that again but i am very anal about the choke as i cant afford the fuel bill:wow:

  5. Evening, took the land rover to get the rims swapped over (Had SWB rims on front temporarily) so after removing 4 extra grip tyres that has not been off for over 15 years by hand:wow:

I took the four rims down to the local place to get changed, on the way i noticed that the land rover felt well like it was choked??

Those of you old enough to remember the old 2 stroke motocross bikes (Maico's,KTM,Husqvarnas etc) remember when the mixture was out, even slightly it would feel choked up like it would rev eventually but it was slow process that is what it felt like going tonight.

Now i use this for my work and load the back up with a lot of weight so four piddly LWB rims shouldnt make that much difference but it just felt like hard work getting to 40+ which is out of character with this truck.

Had many knackered old 2.25 petrols and diesels over the years but this is 13000 mile engine that about 500 miles ago had new plugs points and rotor arms and the carb adjusting with a gas analyser.

I last used it monday and as always it pulls like a dream and revs up quickly, checked compression couple of weeks ago as a matter of interest and i cant recall the exact ratio but according to the handbook they was either dead on or above what they were from the factory specs.

Any ideas, not overly concerned just intrigued.

  6. Right being a hard up old brick layer i cant afford to stockpile 24v ignition parts so in the event of something failing i want a temporary back up so can i use a 12v condenser and how do i fit it and can i use 12v HT leads and how can i fit them to standard shielded distributor?

Also can you replace the copper wire in the leads, FV probably would have the answer to that.

    cheers

  7. Hi guys question for you i am after replacing my shocks and springs, what with it being the military chassis what springs and shocks do you fit as paddocks dont list military suspension items.

Also am after fitting Parabolics at some point, will they fit straight away and again what shocks do you mount with them?

Will the 1 ton shocks do?

    cheers

  8. Hi guys i have a question.

I brought a 1984 Land Rover 109 GS about 6 months ago and stripped it down and scrapped the rotten chassis and bulkhead, it was registered on a Q plate and i have the V5 here in my name, recently i brought a direct release 1984/5 109 GS from P A Blanchards that had a good chassis and bulkhead but everything else was shot.

I then stripped this one down and transferred everything from the First one onto this chassis and bulkhead, even the complete wiring loom!

Now i know that i can get a ARP for it at a later date but i dont mind the Q for now but i want to change the chassis number on the V5, as i like to do things right.

As the direct release one wasn't registered and the chassis it self was replaced before it was cast and therefore no stamped but has the vin plate on the bulkhead and mod plate on the seat box, am i ok to do this and what will the process involve.

I want to do it right as i know that i can get a vin plate made up and just rivet this onto the bulkhead but i want to do it properley and legal.

    Sorry for the long post!

    Thanks guys

  9. I believe you can still pick the rims up but they can be expensive.

Backing bowls are available from Blanchards £45 + VAT per side and they should have the 3 adjuster screws.

You can fit aftermarket 7" headlights, I replaced mine with Wipac Halogen units so I could see where I was going

To remove headlights you push them in slightyl and turn anticlockwise and they should then pull off. The adjusting screws have backing springs and they hold them in place on a with a slotted mounting.

The rims are held together with J clamps. Do not lose them the only place I found selling them wanted way to much money for them

The fixings need to match 3 9 and 12 o'clock so civvy Land Rover units are no good but I believe you can get plastic bowls that work from other classic car part suppliers.

Hi thanks for the reply sorry it took me ages to reply have been busy with work, so i could use plastic backing bowls from paddocks or eBay and use the same headlight, Headlight is i believe a Lucas 700, and just replace the rims with one from blanchard?

Would this all fit and work?

    Thanks

  10. Hello guys my first proper post on here and im asking for help!

The Rims on my 109 GS are rotten, the bits where the infra red stuff attached to i believe, my question is can i get these rims any where and can i use ordinary 7" headlight units and backing bowls and just put new MoD rims on there.

id_landrover_lwb_full.jpgHeres what i mean if you can see that. (note: this is not my LR just a Google images one)

Also how do they come apart and would new bowls have adjusters on them?

    Thnaks guys
