  1. I have to agree with Deadline with regard to the oil seals and gaiters on the front axle, I don't understand how they came up with such an awful design. It's predecessor, the CCKW was a far better vehicle, much better designed. Th M35 I owned had it's build date stamped into the LH chassis frame behind the front wheel but I have no idea if this apples to all M35's.

     

    Bold statement since the M35 has been in production for over 50 years , I have driven both and the much prefer M35 for ride , economy ,power , refinement , brakes . There are some things that need attention now and again but this can be said for the CCkW also

  2. Well I guess I might have been conned then into buying more paint ! We got the stuff from Warpaint and thats what the guy said we needed when we ordered the red oxide and olive drab. Pain in the rear spraying three colours so you reckon we could leave out the gloss green? Too late for most of the work now anyway !! We live and learn......

     

    The original matt finishes of the 1930-40s were porous for sure but they were changed in the 40`s to a less matt finish which sealed better , I cant comment for sure what they have provided you but all the olive drab i have been supplied is redoxide then top coat, However they are the experts if thats what they are telling you i would go with there recomendation as it is there paint, but its a first for me .

Looks good , intresting what you said RE the olivedrab properties , most olive drab is gloss paint with matting agent added in , so I would not say it has the same properties as primer which is porous by design , the gloss will still seal, its surface finish is modified by the agent to apear matt. ?

  4. Lots more progress since last post , so far we have managed...

     

    *changed head gaskets to new style ones as old ones were weeping oil

    *Installed turbo conversion and exhaust

    *Changed all the brake lines and flexible hoses & brake fluid

    *Changed out the last leaking axle seal

     

    Today we spent rubbing her down at the work shop and then a coat of red oxide followed by two heavy coats of olive drab , the paint was supposed to be satin finish but was to glossy for my liking so some matting compound was sourced to dull the finish , about 50 grams per litre was needed . Quite happy with the finish , just need to change some tires ,paint the wheels , paint and fit the bed and hey presto :-) , the list is getting smaller slowly :D:D:D

Well after a 12 month rest I have finally got round to making some progress on the M35 / M109 , I managed to source a drop side load bed so the box was removed a couple of weekends ago , the method I settled for was to tie the box round a tree and drive off, it came of no problems , very smooth infact :) . I have now started the resto , i have some brake lines to replace , going to change ou the flexy hoses out to to be safe , the body has been started also with rubbing down and red oxide , finally going to be olive drab satin . Next job is to swap out the head gaskets (few leaks visable ) and fit the turbo conversion .

     

    Few pictures below , really enjoying it now thigs are moving again :laugh:

    That depends on your skill , if you are good at welding and grinding should be no problem, i should think there are very few people on here with hard cabs and even less who have had to reapir them , steelsoliders is the place to find out .

  7. Yes they do :-) , if a sheet aint big enough you just weld it together ? I have shown the bed to them and they said no problem , the manufacture 40 feet high silos no problem so a 12 foot bed aint an issue believe me .

  8. Well bit of an update just had a chat to a local fabricator and making one is looking favourable at the moment , So the next big question is there anyone in the cheshire or surounding areas who has a M35 cargo which would not mind me coming and taking some measuremnts

    I am still searching for a cargo bed for an M35 , if anyone has anything even a rusted out one that i can repair give me a shout . I know reomie have some old ones but was hoping for a lead in this country

  10. Yes "exhaust gas temperature" , it is a common mod to stick a pyro in the exhaust manifold to keep an eye on the temperatures when messing around with extra fuel , I will be doing this mod as i will turn the fuel up a little when i do the turbo converstion :cheesy:

  11. yes i have sourced a turbo thriugh feebay allready just waiting for it to arrive , interestingly enough the current non turbo engine is clean as a whistle after it has warmed up , no black smoke to be seen ????

  12. Yes i have been on SS it is a wealth of info, ironically i will be using the back to sleep in but the cargo bed will lend itself to the genral use and movement of stationary engines that i show better .

  13. Greetings...

    Well as planed i am now a proud owner of a 1956 M35A2 ,you may have seen her on milweb but i took pitty on her and brought her home , Myself and Gary (stevemill AKA GMC CCKW resto) travelled down to kent last week and drove the hulk back to cheshire . I must say for a 50+ old truck she never missed a beat apart from when the canvas roof gave way and we went convertable just as the rain started ;-) . A rumage in the back uncovered a suitable repair in the form of a small sheet which was rigged and kept us warm all the way back.

     

    As mentioned she is a 1956 non turbo multifuel 17000 miles and 720 hours on the clock , there is plenty to do included some rust repairs to the doors and sills and a couple of axle seals to sort , the plan is to convert her to a whistler turbo and put a crago bed on the back (IF ANY ONE KNOWS OF ONE LET ME KNOW) she will be returned to olive drab also.

     

    Looking fowards to getting stuck into it when the weather warms up and also helping gaz with the CCKW and we plan to be out later in the year, BTW if any one wants a workshop body give me a shout it has the electrics inside the windows look OK bit of rust but would tidy up well

    Is it posible to convert the ld 465 non trubo engine to accepet the later style turbo ? i am guessing as there was only a few horse power gain that the enigne internals were not modified to much ? it is said that it was more to clean the exhaust up than anything .

    Just registered and love the forum all ready, I used to own a unimog 404 which I sold due to finances a few months ago but I am hoping to purchase a reo m35 later this year ( or when one turns up) , I have a collection of old vintage engines but have recently got the military bug and have a friend who is restoring a gmc at the mo which hopefully will be out next year.
