  1. Hello Tony,

     

    Yes Perkins did make a special bell housing and bits to fit the GMC. I think the radiator has to be moved forward but not enough to effect the bonnet, side panels ect. My granddad got 2 out of lime spreaders.

    We tow a Allis Chalmers crawler around on the back of our GMC hence wanting to do an engine conversion in that too.

    I find all these stories of engine conversions and what these engines are like, also it's interesting what approachs people have to engine converting.

  2. I'm going to try the same I have done for my Halftrack with our GMC, using the Cummims engine and the GMC gearbox. It should fit straight in as my granddad put a Perkins P6 in his years ago and the Cummins is shorter than the Perkins engine.

     

    Im going to look into the header tank, there is obviously a lot more room under the Halftrack bonnet compared to the GMC.

  3. The final parts of making this adaptor plate was to machine a piece of for the prop shaft as shown with the gearbox, shot blast the plate to make it look nice and machine the thickness of the adaptor plate off of the engine bell housing.

  4. After creating a fixture, I began by machining off the OD and ID to the correct diameters I needed.

    The next thing was machine the front face and put a step in it for the halftrack gearbox location.

    The next step was to put 2 sets of holes in the plate, 1 set for the halftrack gearbox, the other for the engine. For the gearbox I drilled and tapped the holes for the use of studs when bolting on the gearbox. For the engine I drilled clearance holes for M10 thread, counter bore and countersunk the plate for the use of countersunk screws.

    After machining all the holes I then fitted the adaptor plate to the engine bell housing and gearbox bell housing to see if all my holes lined up.

  5. After some thought while restoring my halftrack, I decided to put a more modern engine in it. When I bought it it came with a Ford industrial engine which I believe there was a company in the 60's making this conversion. So what engine do I put in it? I have a friend who works at first bus and he managed to get me a Cummins 6BT that had just come out of a bus. The next task I had was to fit the halftrack gearbox to the Cummins engine. A few people suggested find the proper bell housing for the engine to suit the gearbox but I had other ideas. I work as a design and development engineer, doing 2D and 3D design as well as good old fashion manual turning, milling ect and love a good project so why not make a adaptor plate to join the halftrack gearbox the the Cummins engine? How hard can it be...?

     

    The first thing to do was find some material, luckily I had a piece of 3/4" thick plate I have had kicking about for years thinking one day it will come in handy. We flame cut it leaving about 1/4" on both the OD and ID. The next minor problem I had was it wouldn't fit on our lathe at work, so how do I overcome it? The solution, use a rotary table on the milling machine and to do this I had the make a fixture to be able to hold the plate.

  6. This is all very interesting. I am currently working on putting a cummins 6BT in my M5 halftrack but I have taken a very different approach. The cummins engine I have came out of a bus which means it has a flat sump, the only thing I have had to get is a flywheel as buses run with torque converters. I have a Borg & Beck pressure plate and clutch which came out of the previous Ford cargo engine that my halftrack was fitted with when I bought it, and that fits directly on the cummins flywheel. I am now currently in the middle of machining an adaptor plate to fit the cummins engine to the original halftrack gearbox.

  7. Thanks for that Nick,that's a great help. It's completely new to me, I'm not familiar with 60's vehicles. It makes a change to work with something so light unlike my halftrack I'm restoring. I'll get some pictures on here if I can, it's still in its original colours, still has it's original marking and mostly complete minus the front seats which I believe the hot rod boys loved in there roadsters and it has no engine for now.

    I have recently purchased a M422 mighty mite but don't know much about them? I know it's one of 1250-ish built, other than the chassis, all the body work is made from aluminium, you can drive it on 3 wheels without it falling over ect. Can anyone help me with information on this jeep, it's uses, original pictures, where could I get spares for it ect?

     

    Any help would be very appreciated.

    Can somebody help? I have a cut away browning 50 cal machine gun. We have had it checked by the police firearms officer in our area but have been told by some military collectors that I still need a de-act cert to have the weapon? So I have the police telling me one thing and collectors telling me something else. Confused.com.

    The 'W' in WM tells you only that it is a wide gauge machine, ie the track assemblies are further apart. A standard narrow gauge machine is just designated M.

     

    Dozer kits were made for both by several manufacturers as at that time none of the crawler tractor manufacturers made their own dozer kits and quite an industry developed converting crawler tractors into dozers, graders, cranes, etc.

     

    The US military had almost every model of crawler tractor made, quite often identical to civilian ones except that they were green, but there were also heavily modified versions such as the ones that were designed for pulling artillery that had front mounted winches, extra seating and military towing arrangements on the back. Otherwise standard tractors used by engineer units tended to have full lighting and guards on the front and in the track frames (to keep mud away from the rollers) but both of these features tend to get removed in their later lives.

     

    Similarly machines that were equiped originally as dozers often lost the dozer kit when they were used for agricultural purposes post war but it is usually possible to tell as the holes where the bits were bolted on have the burned off remains of the bolts or are left open, whereas they would have been plugged with wooden plugs when new, if not needed, to protect the threads.

     

    I think that it would be most unlikely that your tractor would have been used in combat as it is hard to think of a role for it that could not have been better filled by a proper military vehicle but you can be sure that one found itself being shot at somewhere. Still it is a nice tractor and relatively rare, most Ms in the UK are narrow gauge as they were used by the War-Agg for ploughing.

  11. I have ecently bought a Allis Chalmers WM crawler, 1942. I am wondering if anyone can help me as to what they would have been used for in the war? Would they have been used in combat? There is plenty of green paint under the orange and I know the WM is the military version of the M. Any help would be very grateful.Allis Charmers.jpg

    I too have been looking for imperial nuts and bolts for my halftrack. I have been to 3 main dealers around my area (Bristol) and manage to pick up a few odd boxes but not much. I was told that U.N.F is slowly being faded out because there is no big demand for them. The only place I did find is PVR Direct but your talking £15 + for a box of 100 nuts. Hope this is of help to you? What sizes you looking for?
