Farewell Ark Royal...off to a scrapyard in Turkey
THE flagship of the Royal Navy was waved out of Portsmouth on her final voyage yesterday – soon to be turned into razorblades
Britain’s most expensive warship at £220million and spearhead of the Iraq invasion in 2003, the Ark Royal is suffering the humiliation of being towed to a scrapyard in Turkey.
The 22,000-ton ship – launched by the Queen Mother on the Tyne in 1981 – was axed two years ago and her Harrier warplanes sold cheaply to the US for spares.
This left Britain without an aircraft carrier for a decade – a decision described by one expert yesterday as a “national scandal”. In 2011, the Royal Navy had to use the helicopter carrier HMS Ocean for air raids on Libya.

The ship looks in pretty good shape, and here in Greece we fear that the legendary HMS Ark Royal will end up to Turkish Navy fleet.:-(

All the exhibits are in perfect condition, but what impressed me most was the last M3A1 SC...
Is it a real canvas cover under the tarpaulin cover?
Marty, with your permission, I will use your photo to a greek MV forum to show HOW the correct way to exhibit
items in a military vehicle museum must be. Can I?

Nice picture, my 105mm came from Greek Army, such a shame they cut holes in the barrel and breech ring....
We must always remember that these guns were transfered from US ARMY to Greek Army as part of post War military Aid and under certain rules about the use of them, and the last word regarding the ownership of them had the DoD.
So the Greeks couldn't sell these obsolete guns on the open market, and the butcher torch was the only way...
..I was offered an 105 mm as well , served with the Greek Forces , all torched up , just as yours . The seller wants 8500 € for it ...Whaaat? Are you kidding? Too much money!
If I were you I would be patient. The Greek Army took 223 M109A3GEA2 from the Germans last year and we will withdraw all the obsolete hardware, M101 and some M114, to be under the limits, and very soon some tens of them are going to flood the local scrapyards.

Hi Everyone,
I am Kostas, I live in Athens, Greece. Several months after registration, I decide to write some words about me. I promise though to turn up here more frequently, for the future.
I'm a member of the local Athens MV club, with some 70 registered vehicles, as many as a small UK town has. I have a good collection of militaria, and also complete sets of european MV magazines, books and manuals.
As most of you, I have the "green syndrome" too, and I have a Chevrolet C8A HUW truck, currently under restoration programm.
Main interest is British and US vehicles served in Greek Army, and Greek and Balkan Military History.
I wish you all the best.
Kostas.
