  1. What year/model is your GMC? Are you sure it wasn't put together in a 'Little Detroit' and the stencil applied there after reconstruction?

No as it has all the original shipping date 20th april 1945 , it was shipped from N Y to Antwerp {code name Hail }it retains it`s original ORD number and anti freeze fitted date and details of inspection , The details where under coats of newer paint ,the ORD number on the side was under the allied star

  2. Hi

I have seen a few jeeps with the hood canvas stencilled with the canvas makers mark, usually on the inside back panel.

Is there any evidence that this is authentic? And what was the usual wording ?

Also looking at the shipping stencil, I notice that other US vehicles like dodges, half tracks etc have ' US Shipping port' above the numbers, but not on Jeeps ?

    Your thoughts please

    Jules

just out of interest my GMC has the original shipping details on it still and it reads P.S.J (this is the shipping company ) N.Y. (New york) P.E ( port of embarkation ) . the men for stencils are http://www.axholmesigns.co.uk

    cheers

  3. Thanks Colin we were stuck as to whether we carried on with the tie rings or not during the rebuild as we had no idea how long they were with the vehicle, at the moment its a little bit of many styles of jeep, British wing lights, tie rings, us 50cal from a ditched mustang so maybe at some point we'll make it as one form but all jeeps are bitsa's

    cheers

  5. Interesting conclusions Don, one question occurs, did you keep the original cam profile and if so at high revs was valve bounce an issue ?. I'm impressed with the 74.7mph top speed with the screen down, I think I would have to wear my best brown corduroy driving pants if I was behind the wheel :-D. There are additional issues with increasing the overall road speed of course, not least the handling characteristics which at even at design speeds can be unpredictable on some road surfaces. Still as an engineering exercise interesting.

with regard to the valves , everybody goes for big valves on tuned engines, you can massively increase the efficiency by cutting the valve seat back ,if you leave a narrow seat and machine the edge off , you are increasing the valve size buy the amount that is removed , flow the porting and your gaining power for free

i`m pure yorkshire so love things for free

  6. thanks for the interest Towbarlover , it still has the hood number on and i know quite a lot of the history , been on the same base from it`s delivery date july 1943, there are two trucks in the states of the same make and type with very close numbers

i plan to leave it in the original paint for the time been ,it would be a shame to paint such an original vehicle

  7. thought you guys may want a look at the new toy , fresh in from the US after spending it`s working life on whiteman air base from new ,after retirement it was sold to leeton fire department and after a couple of owners came to me

chevrolet 1.5 ton 1943 buffalo fire truck

    6000 miles on the clock

this is a class 500 and pumps 500 gallons a minute so shifts some water (that is when i recon the pump )

i`m leaving it as it is with regard to the paint , brakes are now done , electrics all working now

    and she runs sweet ,

not hitting the road till next year ,

  8. once you have checked your getting a live to the coil , and are happy your getting a spark i`d check there is no water in the carb , then check the braided fuel lines that are near the filter, they rot inside , this makes the engine hunt for fuel ,this can give a very weak mixture, when the engine runs lean it can make the engine backfire like an ignition fault ,you can also get backfires when there`s water in the fuel , the fuel pipes look ok on the outside and perish on the inside , just a thought !

  9. John, that short but great video put most of us in the "shade" so to speak.

It really does show that there is life beyond sitting in field measuring bolts and counting rivets.

Good on you mate and keep the enjoyment coming.

    See you soon

    Gary
