We have one. lovely machine. later type with the ACE AV760 in it AEC axles I believe, Aveling Barford badge on the front, Leyland badge on the back, Scammell LD55 cab.  The last days of the British motor industry Leyland empire. poor thing is outside at the moment, starter motor dead and Clutch slave seals gone.

Really! We've just fitted a new clutch to ours. Have you got any pictures?

    Hi Harry,

Never owned one but worked on quite a number of army ones from 1974 into the 1980's. The 690 was the early one then the last ones the army had were fitted with the AEC 760 engine. First one I worked one, had to take the engine out and strip it as a con rod had gone through the block. The block was repaired and I rebuilt it. I loved them, a really straight forward truck to work on. Your looks like it has extension sides on as the army ones were lower and when the miners strike was on, some of the army ones had to be fitted with extension sides. The 690 was built by Thornycroft and the later 760 built by Scammell. Aveling Barford was part of British Leyland at the time.

Thankyou nice to here a bit of info about the truck we don't know much about it

Harry I have founds some more sheets

    FAESP 6115-H-500-101  Purpose & Planning

    FAESP 6115-H-500-201 Operating Information

FAESP 6115-H-500-512 Failure Diagnosis & Repair Instruction

Before you get too excited transferring from fiche is a nightmare, it is hard enough to read on the screen, taking a photo makes it worse. Some of the pages are hard enough to view on the original as they are rather indistinct. I see that the shots have got clipped rather. I hope there might be some clues here, if you can read anything, then I can take some more pictures but the clarity won't be any better.

This is the sort of thing I am after thankyou! How would I go about getting my own copy of the hole manual?

I only have FAESP 6115-H-500-821 Generator Set, 16/24 KW (Newton Derby) Gen. Instr & Index.

Was there any particular issue you wanted to cover? I would have to take photos which will not be the easiest to read though.

Hi mate! I'm struggling with getting the engine governor actuator working. Any instructions or repair manual that would help would be most appreciated

    Thanks Harry

Back in work shop tomorrow will look in my junk box. They work  on magnetic induction ,as the ring gear teeth pass the sender they induce a AC voltage which is fed to the controller, as the speed goes up or down its conspired to the set reference for up or down adjustment to the speed.send me PM so I can let you know what I find.

Still havnt managed to fix this! Tried a new sensor still no luck! Any one with any information who can help would be brilliant. I'm prepared to pay someone who is capable of fixing it for met to come take a look

It should be easy enough to test once you know how it works (probably reluctance).  Try googling the part number on it or find the NATO stock number from a parts list.  It is conceivable that I might have a microfische.  Mogmaner appears to be on the ball with this one!

    John

Hi John, I've had it tested now by someone with a bit more experience than me! He's prety sure it's not working! Have tried Googleing the part number but no luckk.

But have found some generic sensors for generators. the same size and with the same thread. Hopefully one of these may fit?

    Thanks Harry

Later units go into lock out if there is no signal from the flywheel ,main things to check is battery volts to the unit then the sensor .if these are ok you may have a board or actuator fault, bad connections and flywheel signal are the most common cause of starting problems .

Hi Again! Done as you instructed, im not getting any current out of the sensor, tried ajusting still no luck! I guess now is the time to try and source a new sensor and go from there. Fingers crossed it works. Thanks for your help so far!

Check the flywheel sensor is clean , these pick up metal particles from the ring gear over time, when refitting tuck on to the ring gear lightly the back off 1.5 turns ,connect a meter across the the sensor on A.C. then spin the engine over .you should get 5v or more pulses. This is fed to the governor as a reference for speed control .if you find the model of governor I may have some paper work . Hope this helps.

This is a big help thankyou, I will try this tomorrow. Would this stop the engine from starting? I have attached photos below. Many thanks

  9. Hi There, recently acquired this large diesel generator. Managed to get it to start BUT only if I operate the injector pump myself manually. There is something stopping g the engine governing and idaling on it's own. The actuator arm doesn't move by its self al though isn't seized as I can moove it manually. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Or have any documents for this beast?

    Thanks Harry 20200412_100810.thumb.jpg.0f8aa772c1e8d2f4477159b3f7107d3a.jpg

    Hi Scoobie,

The age of this set ...... as I said previously, my recollection is that they came into service in the Eighties. Before that we had the old Meadows 27.5kva sets, plus the Morrison, Petbow and Air-Log 10kva, all trailer mounted sets.

The only technical manuals on the generator that I can remember are AESP, which are army technical publications.

    The reference numbers of these manuals start with 6115-K-500 followed by a three figure number as follows;

    201 Operating information

    302 Technical Description

    512 Failure diagnosis

    522 Repair instructions

    523 Repair instructions

etc. other instruction include parts catalogue, installation, maintenance, etc.

Hi is there anywhere I can get these manuals from? I have one of thes generators in my yard and cannot get it to automatically control the engine speed in accordance to load.

    Thanks
