  1. Once you have the record card it may be clear whether she spent her entire service with the Army Fire Service, or whether, later on, she was passed to another unit. While I wouldn't expect the record card to record any change of colour (from an original factory finish DBG to say, a camouflage green), as that would be done at unit level, if it remained with the AFS then I doubt she would have been repainted at all. Why do I think that? Well, an AFS Land Rover such as yours would not be required to go on exercise, so there would be no requirement for camouflage paint and of course, the wear and tear on a vehicle employed locally around a depot, garrison area or even local training area wouldn't be that great - no more than a civilian vehicle doing similar admin tasks. But... in this hobby, "never say never"!

    Good luck with your information-gathering.

I have the record card and it confirms she stayed with the AFS at West Moors all her service life so I'll stay with DBG then.

    Thank you,

  2. Hi Mick,

I think your question was answered in your previous thread. I see from the record card that it was disposed of after leaving West Moors, and given its role, may well have remained in Deep Bronze Green.

    See here;

Seems from the responses I've had I'll stick with Deep Bronze Green.

    Thank you,

  3. Hi, I own an ex Army Fire Service Series 3 Land Rover 88 (40 GT 06). She entered service in 1979 at West Moors and was retired in about 1993. In her early days she was in Deep Green Gloss. Does anybody know if she would have been painted in drab or camo in her later service life? If so what crest/markings could I expect her to have worn?

    Thanks Mick

  4. This is the photograph , S2A 88" Rover 10 (early) , unfortunately on the front of this book it is heavily cropped - so beacon mount on roof missing. I have a good copy somewhere in full on this computer - can't find it just now.

No - I would not cut a hole in a good hood roof either !!

Because it is a RAF Contract - it does not have the Army type air-lift bumperettes of a S2A , just std. bumperettes with front 'D' loops

It looks like I'll need a canvas hood, blue lamp with a mast, door transfers and D rings to get my landie looking the part. The canvas and D rings seem to be readily available but I've no idea where to source the lamp and transfers. Am I right in thinking the paint is called bronze green?

  5. Yours has red painted 'D' rings , I will have to hunt out a photograph of 07GN11 still on trailer from auction - I don't think it had them fitted at that stage.

The roof bracket mount for blue lamp , it does seem a daft idea when you wish a hood canvas to be water-tight , however you will find a RAF Police 88" photograph on the internet (I should have it saved) but a Rover 10 early type (that is a S2A with deep sills and headlamps in radiator panel with inverted T grille mesh , flat apron. Later Rover 10 had S3 wing mtd style headlamps and galv. X type grille mesh + shallow sills , curved apron -same as S3, so it was a bit of a S2A / S3 hybrid). As such - there were no S2A 88" CL's (commercial logistics).

Think I'll have to go for the mast on the screen as you suggested in your earlier post (if I can even find a lamp that is). Don't think I'd want to ruin any hood I might buy.

  6. Here are 2 shots of the West Moors Landie; Please note these pictures were posted on a RAF/DFS fire group on Facebook so credit for the pictures is to Steve Greenaway. These will show you everything you need to know- blue light, canvas top, markings , colour etc

    regards TED

Thank you very much, you've answered a lot of questions for me.

  7. Hi,

I've purchased the B vehicle record card for my Land Rover from RLC.

Any help explaining it would be greatly appreciated.

All I can make out is that it went to the Army Fire Brigade at Westmoors, not sure how long for. I don't understand what the "VBO" or "S/O" means in the TXN column. Does anyone know what the abbreviation ADT means in the Unit title column.

I think colour code 72 means bronze green gloss, if so would it have remained this colour until it was sold off? What markings, equipment etc... would it have carried when with the Army Fire Brigade?

    Many Thanks,

    Mick

  8. Hi, I'm Mick Flindall. My children and I have been attending Military Vehicle shows with friends and decided we wanted a vehicle of our own.

I've now bought a 1979 Land Rover Series 3 88" SWB. It needs some welding and other minor work doing to it before repainting into military colours.

Any advice on improving gear selection and braking would be gratefully accepted.

Military registration number was 40 GT 06. If anyone has any information of her during her Army days or how she would have looked I'd really appreciate it.

    Cheers Mick
