  2. A long time ago I had one (from 1957) for several years. It was my first military vehicle and I loved it.

     

    In no particular order:

    It is very sturdy and is overengineered.

    It is rather slow, maximum speed is somewhere between 70 and 80 kilometers/hour but closer to 70 than to 80 I think.

    Therefore a different and relaxing experience on the motorway. No one to overtake.

    It doesn't offer great visibility around you.

    The windscreen can be folded down, the doors can be lifted out and the soft top can be removed, one big fun convertible!

    It is surprisingly good off-road.

    I like the looks of it (still do).

    I found the seats comfortable for what they are.

    Not many Dutch designed and built vehicles around.

    Lots of room in the back and the planks can be arranged to give a completely flat cargo bed.

    Doesn't have good fuel economy.

     

    Go for it!

  3. I think there must be some overlap between the Pistonheads audience and the HMVF audience.

    Both are interested in vehicles and apparently people on Pistonheads are interested in military history too.

    Thank you for your reply. Your TACR register is brilliant, I have admired that for a while now.

     

    Because of all the magazines and books that the photos are in and the schmozzle involved in A getting permission to use the images B the physical activity of actually scanning and uploading them, it isnt going to happen, I just wont live that long.

     

    A simple database is all I can manage, in the public domain, with a moderator only upload of changes, but viewable to all and sundry in the public domain in perpetuity (perhaps Jack will allow it on here).

     

    A line would ready something like this:-

     

    04 FD 45 Scorpion CMV 108 May 2010 P39 B+W B+W AMFL Norway ca 1980

     

    Which would translate out as:-

     

    04 FD 45 Scorpion Classic Military Vehicle magazine issue 108 May 2010 on page 39 photo is black and white vehicle is black and white in use by Ace Mobile Force Land in Norway circa 1980

     

    Of course if there was a subsequent photo of the same vehicle in a different scheme or different upgrade fit with a different user then there would be another line above or below it with that info. Bob Morrison used that system that I had to track a articular Land Rover ambulance in about 5 different users and varying camouflage schemes.

     

    So, gradually over time as others send in scanned in images to the moderator they can be sorted through and added without any copywrite issues. It also saves me buying every publication ever printed. We can all assist in sending stuff in.

     

    So when Sirhc posts about a recently demobbed CVRT we can see all the different places it may have served that have been captured in film at.

  5. A long time ago, when I had time, I used to make scale models, quite a bit.

     

    At that time, I had started making a list of all British Military Vehicles and their Military registration number or ARN. It also showed what colour scheme they were in and a bit of extra info if say it was an oddity ie like a Bedford truck in white but fitted with a snow plow in Cyprus etc. The listing made mention of which publication the photo was in and what page etc so anyone could find the resource later. I did it manually listing the vehicles in the ARN sequence and at no time did I copy in the photo.

     

    I am, foolishly, considering doing this again, starting from scratch, trolling through all my reference material. this time I would like to do it in a manner that ensures that the effort is not lost like my past one. I would like to somehow set it up in the public domain on a free basis. I guess someone, likely me, would have to be the administrator, so that others could pass on info and make that available to the list.

     

    I am just trying t get my head around the enormity (and foolishness) f the project and what benefirt others could derive of it.

     

    I know when I did the old one it was useful to people as one could track in service pictures of vehicles during their lifetime.

     

    I now throw open the floodgates for discussion, be aware that if you suggest something I might ask you to be part of this vortex!

  6. I've dealt with them (I bought my Wolf 90 there) and I've been to a few of their viewing days.

     

    Most of the sales they have are tenders. You register with them and can then bid online.

     

    Sometimes they sell lots that have not been sold in the tender as spot bids. You place a bid and they either accept it or they don't. But the spot bids are the exception the normal way is the tender.

  7. I have very good experiences with them. They sold a vehicle for me and supplied parts for another one.

    They went out of their way to help me.

    They ship quickly and are experts on Land Rovers. They have many in stock including a fair amount of Wolf 90's.

     

    Recommended.

  9. I looked at different options in August and bought the GT-170 GPS GSM tracker see http://www.simvalley.us/gt-170. Haven't actually made use of it yet but did get it out of the package and read the manual.

    It all looks good and fairly easy to use. If I remember correctly it also had good reviews.

     

    You can use a prepaid SIM card. It will alert you with a text message containing its location if it moves beyond a preset distance. You can also send it a text asking it where it is and it will reply with a text. The text message contains a link to Google maps. If you click the link on a smart phone it will show you the position.

    I like the looks of the Salamander! I have drooled over the one in the RAF museum in Hendon.

    Great, it took them a while, thanks for the heads up!

     

    I went over a few weeks ago and I've never seen as many as Land Rovers for sale except when MVS was selling the Series 3 Land Rovers. Hundreds if not thousands all lined up but I was not allowed a good browse so I didn't buy anything.

    Was just looking at the tender listing but there's only limited info there.

    Still not sure if there's any Land Rover there worth bidding on.

     

    The two Land Rover Station Wagons look like they are non military which would make them less interesting for us all.

  13. Important thread this, kids unrestrained in open vintage vehicles always worries me, as to lap belts, please don't fit them, google 'lap belt injuries' to see why.

     

    All seat belts will cause some soft tissue damage in an accident, but studies show that when lap belts only are used, fatal injuries occur throughout the entire range of speeds, as low as 12mph, with three point restraints, no deaths occurred at speeds less that 60mph.

    Hmmm food for thought. I do have lap belts in the rear of the Land Rover...

    Not sure what's in the back of the current Wolf version, don't remember three point belts there.

    I was just about to write that you need to make sure that the seat belts are anchored to something that can take the strain in case of an accident so I completely agree with Mark. Do make sure your sense of security is not a false sense of security!

    I didn't install the belts myself but had it done by a Land Rover specialist.

    Sorry I don't know what the make of the seat belts is (and I am currently not near to my Land Rover).

  15. GuysI'm about to get my first GMC 352. The thought of not being fastened in with the normal three point seat belt in today's cars does cause me some concern. (Some years ago my belt saved me from serious injury). What do you all do ? Do you just risk it, or have you installed lap belts or something ? I plan to take my 9 year old son out and about with me. In the car he sits on a booster seat. Any thoughts on how I'm fixed legally ?Please share your thoughts with this novice to the historic military vehicle world.Kind regards to allVulture

     

    I have taken the leap and traded some of the originality of my Land Rover for extra safety for my children.

    I now have two lap belts installed on the bench seats in the rear. It's better than nothing.

    I know what I value more...
