  1. anyone come accross this yet?

Need to sort some trade insurance for a few mv's inc. a russian tank.

Havet found an insurance company that will insure me to earn from some of the mv;'s when public are involved and its using roads.

Someone suggested trade ex but i don't think they're that cheap.

Who is the chap with the repro tiger that digs in behind the arena bank at Beltring?

I'm sure he must haved sorted out something similar as he's used it for films and bits and bobs?

  2. G'day.

Have a convo with some americans on aother forum about the possibility of using an engine and transmission from a car in a boat.

My questions was... Is it possible to have a smooth enough gearchange and utilise lower revs in the engine to cruise?

Some responses came back, pointing out that the reason boat engines run/rev quite high is that they are generally in '1st gear' all the time due to the enormous friction and pressure of the water against the hull.

    Some suggested trying it.

This got me thinking... What does the DUKW and the stolly do to transmit power to the props or jets when in the water?

they are both manual or does the stolly have an auto?

Do they just stay in one gear when self propelling in water then?

    What is the ride like?

    Any ideas?

  3. Ah yes. here's the picture.

    Suspension research vehicle 1.

Looks like it should have bigger tires but there is a bump stop about an inc and a half above the rear tires.

Looks a tad like the aircraft tugs. Perhaps that is why it was reasonably low and could raise up high?

The suspension arms are under the canvas cover.

  4. Interesting. Didn't know it came up a few times...

Perhaps it wasn't what they expected. Not the same without the rolls royce engine anyway!

I know what i would have done with it...

Pop a chunky lump back in... paint it up NATO green, put some brakes on it, probably from a lorry and get it all functioning again.

Would definitely turn some heads at the shows.

  5. I know the guy that does the rollers and it did sell... can't remember where it went though.

Went for about £650 if i remember rightly.

    Sodding weird item.

Not the kind of vehicle i would feel very comfortable in whilst doing a fair clip with that roller lump.

Never worked our what it was designed for. It had automatic fire extinguishing systems on it and inside. Tires were road and wheels were large. As to why it had to raise up and lower again .....

The kind of vehicle Noddy would invent!

    Have a picture somewhere.

    Cheers

  6. Some time ago, last year, about spring? a strange vehicle appeared at a nearby workshop to have its Rolls Royce engine removed by a Roller mechanic / restorer.

The vehicle then became surplus to his requirements and was sold.

I almost bought it. It came from an MV collectors yard in Wiltshire and was a suspension research vehicle and had hydraulic suspension arms that ran from the centre of the vehicle, fore and aft and lifted the vehicle up when so desired.

It looked rather 'Alvis' and had a fair few land rover parts on it.

The engine was rear mounted and its gearbox assembly was somewhat haphazard.

Wondering where it is now and whether the new owner replaced the engine or got the brakes working! (it ran but had no brakes on its massive aluminium wheels!)

    ;)

  7. saw some pretty heavy duty dustnadoes tearing accross the field next to the show ground. It was like a scene from some exercise in the middle east.

This will surely make all the sand coloured vehicles look very authentic...

and get in everyone's tea cups.

    and eyes (mine)

    and sleeping bags..

    ARGH!

  8. Thats a very nice truck indeed.

when i saw your thread for Berliet i immediately assumed it was one similar to the ones at RR Services at the mo.

Not come accross them before but i do like!

you said your crane slews. we're talking left and right here i imagine...

how does it do this? spin around that central pivot point?

7 odd litre too. thats tidy. not toooo big (like the eagle diesel 12 L) and not too small.

Where are you on the south coast then?

    we're in Brede, East Sussex

    cheers

  9. 07AH49 in 1969 operated mainly on the airfield at RAF Chivenor on aircraft salvage duties and was painted overall yellow.

Somewhere on your vehicle will be a plate with its original RAF reg number which should be **AH ** The BT is an Army reg number, BT being allocated to vehicles transferred to the Army from either the RAF or RN .

    Hope this is useful

    TED

    Thanks for this Ted.

I will have a look tomorrow for the AH number.

Great to know what its original RAF number was and that it was, indeed all yellow (i am living and breathing these layers of paint as i sand hrough them! ahhh, you gotta love history!)

Keen to see a photo of it back then.

So now i have its RAF number i may have some luck find even arlier information and photos than 1969 ?

    thanks

    Matt Carey

  10. Well here is a turn up for the books, I did ask Tankmaniac if he knew the original RAF reg number for his Explorer but to date he hasn't replied. I learnt today from a contact of mine that 43BT30 was one of a batch of 4 transferred to the army. 43BT30 was originally 07 AH 49 In my post where I quoted from AMO 32 I mentioned at the foot of the message 07 AH 49 served at RAF Chivenor and was painted yellow. There is in fact an in-service photo of it at Chivenor on another forum.

    TED

    Very good!

    thanks indeed.

i was too busy cleaning and sanding the scammel to check the forum for replies.

Thats great, so it was actually 07AH49 and was at Chivenor... and there is a pic online! top stuff.

it's going to be Raf blu/ grey in a few days though...!

We will then decide whether it gets a white top or yellow upper surfaces.

Certainly it has yellow in many many places, including the axles.

    cheers

    Matt Carey

  11. My old one had a similar history to yours having been at RAF Kinloss on recovery/snowplough duties. The layers of paint were the same with the exception of the second blue coat, and interestingly the wing markers on mine were identical to yours. Is it still fitted with the extra tank for vacuum braked trailers?

yes it has the braked trailer tank.

    this unit is completely original.

toady i ran the pto winch to lower the spare tire on the back.

    a very satisfying experience!

  12. Hi folks.

This week i will mostly be painting . . . the scammel.

This one's a RAF unit and we have RR services RAF Blue for the topcoat.

    However...

Should cettasin areas have been another colour?

perhaps yellow axles and brake line taps and linkages?

The unit has layers of paint in the following order:

    RAF Blue

    Grand Machinery Yellow

    RAF Blue

Olive Drab (as it was used by the army finally)

Our thinking is that it was painted yellow because it would have been on an airfield at some time.

Also, the registration of SSU 404 implies that it was first used in Scotland.?

    Any info appreciated.

  13. Hey nice one.

    loads of good information there.

Beleive it or not i got a signal... halfway up the readout as i was up the hill.

came home and signal dropped to 1.7 but was still receiving the signal.

this was great news... until i tried to transmit..

this was the only thing that was working! nada. zilch.

    like 1 instead of 30!

must be something dodgy... perhaps my 12v supply connections... will check.

Went over the military chassis i have and grabbed a spare 90 degree bnc which is reusable. putting this onto the coax with p259 cb connect to see what the side aerials will do when tuned.

i can see a garden style horizintal antennae coming up!

Anyone tried these? like 17 or 36 feet long?

  14. Thanks all/.

Do any of you know where i can source connectors and cable?

i could do with making up some BNC to CB cables but the connecs would need to be the pukka ones.

Also, still struggling to get a signal even though i have earthed my base mount and changed the aerial!

does the cb body need to be grounded even though the CB negative goes to the batt which grounds?

  15. thanks for the replies.

changed the aerial, mount and cable and still not got a good signa.

Does the CB chassis have to be earthed too? i mean the CB negative power goes to the battery negative which goes to ground.

My SWR test was a little better although not so good on thevery high channels.

Reference test showing 3 now which is closer to the ideal 1.5.

I have earthed the aerial mount to the chassis.

CB signal is still very low on the scale.

    Argh!

  16. Does anyone know if the standard FFR copper aerials, approx 9ft, are usable for a CB?

I have a SWR tuner and could tune the aerial if it was suitable.

If not, can anyone recommend an aerial for CB?

I can use my wing mounts on the wings to mount it... but does it need to be touching the metal to ground?

    cheers
