  1. Thanks for that - much better! Still waiting to hear from the vehicle owner. I fear the images may not be of sufficient quality for printing, and I'd like to get his agreement before we use any of them anyway.

    Thanks again for your help.

  2. Thanks for that. I found those, and they're mainly pictures of restoration work, which although very interesting, aren't really what we're after. There are a couple of shots of restored vehicles though - I've sent a PM to the poster to ask permission to use them.

  3. Good morning everyone.

A German author and good pal of mine is looking for pictures what he describes as the HUMBER SCOUT CAR for a new publication.

I've referred him to the IWM collection and pathé news, but he's looking particularly for modern pictures, taken at shows or re-enactments.

Are there any on the "circuit"? Anyone have any pictures please? Hagen is always meticulous in crediting the source of pictures - I've helped him out a couple of times before.

  4. A friend of mine here in Dorset (Ferndown) has a Morris Tilly, He's restored, owned and rallied it for about 40 years. He would be happy to share time/pictures/stories etc, but he's not on the internet. I can act as go between if required.

    Ron

Thank you Ron. That would indeed be very helpful.

  5. Thank you Tony, thank you Ron.

First response was to reccomend Hagen to the Tilly register, and to send him a link to the same.

He loves your photo Tony, and asks for a better resolution copy please - he needs the pictures for printing, ultimately, and not for web use.

If anyone out there has a Morris Tilly that they'd be happy to give pictures of or to have photographed, I'd love to hear from you.

    Thanks again chaps.

  6. Good morning everyone. A German author friend of mine has asked if I know anyone who could provide him with some good pictures of what he describes as a "Morris light utility car".

I don't, offhand - I guess it's one version of what might be called a "Tilly"?

Can any of you folks be any help, please?

  7. Good morning Nigel, good morning Peter, good morning MW.

Very much depends on what you'd like to do. I must emphasis that it's a Living History event at which there will be suitable historic vehicles, NOT a military vehicle event per se.

So if you want to simply visit us, you'll be welcome any time.

If however you'd like to attend the event on a more formal basis, please complete and return the form that you'll find here -

  8. Great to hear that someone can get over and work on these tanks, I will post some of the photos I took. As I said Charlie 1 is by far the worst which figures as its on the beach! The lighter metalwork on the upper surfaces is badly corroded as are a lot of the metal struts strengthening the metalwork of the track guards. The one on Hill 112 is in need of a fresh coat of paint. The one outside the museum at bayeaux had weeds growing out of the back end. Pretty shocking for one supposedly being looked after by a museum. There are also two others that need attention both Churchill/Centaurs, one at Pegasus bridge and the other nearby the Montgomery statue. These both just look shabby because of faded paintwork.

It all begs the question about who is responsible for them, long term, and what funds are available for their preservation. Does the British government pay anything? They bloody should do!

C1 has just been painted, and it now looks OK. I met the lads who were over there to do it at a ceremony on Saturday - from 62 sqn RE on a "battlefield tour". Their OC reckoned it was the only way he could get it done........Sadly where it's placed it will need doing again for next year.

  9. Tony, you know fine well what I mean.

Part of the hire conditions for the balloon are that it is "supervised" once aloft, and brought down in case of high wind or thundery activity.

Jean-Pierre, bless him, has asked if we'll help with that, as we'll be on site. So I'm looking for a crew of BOPs (Pam tells me that the WAAFs who did such things were known as that - like OWLs I guess!)

I had noticed the figures in the sleds on Eddie's picture by the way - my point was that I'm sure Porpoises were used as extemporised transport, too.

  10. Sounds excellent! 2014 it is!

Will certainly come have a look at the camp in 2014.....missed it in 2009!....I don't know how, but we weren't able to find it....

It should be easier to find in 2014 - the museum have just arranged the purchase of a captive "barrage" balloon to be flown for the period of the camp! All we need now is a crew for it.......

I'd not seen that photo before eddie - not sure if they're porpoises though - the shape of the front seems wrong. I'm sure that they were put to use for that purpose though.

  11. Well, we're doing our "bit".

The fields are sorted, twice the space of 2009, and a bunker that we hope to have excavated. Gunpits and trenches will be dug, if requested.

Funds have been secured for the usual 50% contribution to the hire of toilets and showers, final night meal etc.

Two "runs out" are in the planning stage - one to Pegasus Bridge, the other to Tilly sur Seulles.

Negotiations continue with Brittany Ferries for a preferential rate (if they're still trading by then!) as do negotiations with town, district, county and state for subsidy.

  12.

    Dah, dum, dum....tsee.....
    :D

We should have another go at that MLU meetup in 2014 as well, Richard.

Geoff...by the way. The last time I was in Ver-sur-Mer one of the bunkers was being converted into a villa!

    Morning Alex, morning all.

Indeed, the bunker that you speak of was bought a few years ago by someone, with the intention of turning it into a studio for his daughter. Since then work has progressed intermittently - but I've not seen any progress for a while. Will have a chat to the chap on who's land it stands next time I see him.

  13. Thank you Tony.

Phil's providing most of the material - I'm just handling the techy stuff.

Lauren, any work purporting to be about the Y service that doesn't work with, or at least acknowledge, Garats Hay would be very foolish. Phil used to be a member there, I think - dunno if he still is.

Their website is hardly a model of clarity, to be fair.......

If any of you know of stuff we can link to, or reference works we've ,missed, do please let us know.

  14. The Cheese THE CHEESES! Could be used to repair boot soles, fix radiator leacks, place tin in issue sock and it was a devestating close range weapon. A pice of string pocked down through and you have a candle. Any thing but eat the bloody stuff! :D Apparently it was illeagal to feed it to prisoners. Now Babies Heads, I still drool over the thought of Baby Head and Smash. Followed by dried apple and sugar, if the apple hadn't gone into the porridge.

My attention could always be diverted by a slice of compo fruit cake with a slice of cheese possessed on it.

Something that my Det commanders very quickly realised............
