abn deuce Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 Found this photo on a link from the ww2dodge.com site http://www.lib.byu.edu/dlib/wwiiheslop/ of what I think is a Chevy 1 1/2 ton truck converted to a semi trailer unit ,Guessing the trailers brakes would have been electric . a mobile command post vehicle? N.O.S. Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 Looks like it, large numbers of these artic units ran on the post D Day Red Ball operations. Nice pic! Quote
42 chevy Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 It would not be a conversion, there were several tractors made, one of the rare configurations of the Chevy. The trailer brakes were electric, the control was mounted on the frame and was activated by a rod that was attached to the push rod going to the master cylinder, and the rheostat was in rte dash. N.O.S. Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 Perhaps Pat Ware might consider posting that wonderful picture of a whole convoy of these Chevys from his book Red Ball Express on here, for the benefit of those across the water?: Quote
abn deuce Posted March 7, 2009 Author Posted March 7, 2009 (edited) Did this vehicle have an "G" number ? Anyone have other photo's of these trucks ? Edited March 29, 2009 by abn deuce corrected question Quote
N.O.S. Posted March 7, 2009 Posted March 7, 2009 One pic (unidentified location) shows W-338013 The Red Ball pic shows USA 3296773-S of 3014TC, which is how the Chev artic formerly at the Hop Farm was painted! From the same book we learn that these Chev artics were originally intended for the Far East (possibly the lightly laid Burma Road?) but were diverted to Red Ball duties instead. Quote
les freathy Posted March 7, 2009 Posted March 7, 2009 The truck is pretty standard but i am very interested in that semi trailer its not one i have seen before and i would like to find out its purpose, as usual half of the interesting bit is cut off. Deep in the bowls of my archive i have a late 1940s TM data book so will check this out for info Quote
abn deuce Posted March 7, 2009 Author Posted March 7, 2009 The trailer just ahead of the chevy may be similar , it appears to have a dollie and barn doors on the back but no windows . Quote
chevy1944 Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 the chevy is a G7113 tractor unit, the trailer was used by signal corps to transport communications equipment Quote
