HMVFs help needed!!!

Jack

Recommended Posts

Folks,

A dear friend of mine owns a WW11 German mv and is trying to get it complete for the show season but is having some problems with it that he can't solve.

Dave isn't a member here yet but will get him to login. He asked me if we could help. I was going to offer my services but thought that I would give everyone else a chance to solve it first......:coffee:

So here are the problems....

It's a 6 cylinder diesel engine.

Problem 1: Running excessively smoky which may be due to the injector spacing

Problem 2: When driven there is a thumping noise which would appear to be coming from the front off side of the vehicle. It increases/decreases with speed. My thoughts are a worn hub or universal joint as the differential is fine.

Problem 3: When idling, the engine produces a clunking noise which I can't locate!

It also needs a basic service/check as the head gasket has recently been replaced.

I said to Dave that we would have this solved in no time!

Any help would be very very appreciated!

Kind regards,

Jack.

Re prob #1 - if it's black smoke then - from what I recall of the driver training module it could be one of these:

  1. Excessive amount of fuel injected
  2. Incorrect injection timing (too far retarded)
  3. Dirty air filter, too little air getting in
  4. Worn injectors
  5. Poor grade or contaminated fuel
  6. Blocked exhaust system.

Re. prob #3 - what sort of "clunking noise" - you aren't mixing this up with the pronounced "knock" heard (and felt) or early diesels are you???

Hi,

It's my lorry Jack posted about!

The engine is a 1951 Mercedes-Benz OM312 6 cylinder diesel. The vehicle itself is a Mercedes L3000A with a lot of post war body on it!!

Thanks for the suggestions so far, it is very much appreciated. My abilities are somewhere between 'well meaning amateur' and 'clueless'!

Dave,

Problem 1

I suggest you get the injectors checked and serviced, could be sticking or worn hence the smoke. Also as has already been mentioned, check the air cleaner and air intake for obstruction, collapsed hoses, etc. Could also be an injection pump problem, but a first call is the injectors, a diesel injection specialist will be able to put them on his tester and tell straight away if there is a fault in them.

Problem 2

I think this is a four wheel drive truck, am I right? As Degsy says, it could be a tyre with a flat on it, from standing in one place too long. But if 4x4, then it might be a drive joint in the swivel...........also occured to me that the front axle drive is engaged, worth checking this.

Problem 3

This could be anything, check oil pressure for starters, in case it has worn bearings, this would show as a low oil pressure.........not familiar with that engine.

That's what mine should look like, but it has a post war front end as the Danes used it until the early 70s.

The Blitz ambulance started life as the GS version and we built the body on over a couple of weekends (I assume you mean this one):

This is mine just as the last paint was drying in 2004:

We also have a 1944 Citroen T23RU built to Wehrmacht specifications with an 'ersatz' office body:

Well we must have spoken then at the Bovington show as i was chatting with some of the guys in 6th Fallschirmjager at the time when i came over.

The one at Beltring (ambulance) was with the 2nd Battle group the owner (i presume) said he had just retired and was going to restore it properly.

I think we may well have done!!

I know the other ambulance that you mean. From looking at it, it's been very badly messed about with after the war, the main issue being the sealing of the rear doors!

You are amongst fine company Dave :coffee:

Do you need someone to come over and give you a hand?

A 'thumping' noise from the front could be caused by a tyre rather than the more metallic noise you would expect from a hub or drive shaft fault.

Degsey could well be right about tyres. :sweat:If the wagon has been standing a flat spot might have developed. Try swopping for a back wheel if a replacement not available. Check that the rim is on tight. Loosen and check for wear on the studs or holes.

As for thumping noise whn idiling, cut a piece of broom handle and use as a stehoscope, stupid but works.
