Jessie The Jeep Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 I thought it was getting further away by 30mm a year? Quote

Guest catweazle (Banned Member) Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 I thought it was getting further away by 30mm a year? No metric measurements please :-D Quote
Jessie The Jeep Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 Sorry, my 250,000 mile steel rule is actually only in metric. My wood imperial one is only 200,000 miles long. Quote
Guest catweazle (Banned Member) Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 Sorry, my 250,000 mile steel rule is actually only in metric :rofl::rofl:Thats interesting the miles are imperial and the little bits are metric so you lied.:-D Quote
Jessie The Jeep Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 The 250,000 mile length was only an approximate guess as I can't see the end to tell you what it is in kilometres. Quote
Jessie The Jeep Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 I'm guessing that what this thread is all about is that while the moon is moving further away all the time, there is a slow eliptical variation to its orbit, and tomorrow is its closest encounter for some time?? Would that be a good guess? Quote
Jack Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 I thought it was getting further away by 30mm a year? Steve - I thought it was 29.98mm a year:??? - now going outside for a look.. :coffee: Quote
Guest catweazle (Banned Member) Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 Thats the general idea mate ,if its clear tomorrow i will try and get some pics thro the telescope, the problem is vibration from the buses etc,you dont notice it till you look thro a scope at high magnification plus tracking it as well. Its not just that its at its closest its a full moon as well.cw. Jessie The Jeep Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 Full moon? So how much does it take to fill it? Quote
Jessie The Jeep Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 Also been watching Venus and Jupiter for the last week or so. Wish I still had access to the telescope at South Tyneside College. I knew the astronomer/lecturer who worked there until she retired. That was large enough to clearly see the 'big four' around Jupiter. Steve Quote
Jack Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 Hang on - just taken some pictures........ Quote

Jessie The Jeep Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 I wish I could join in, but I sent my Digi SLR away for a service. It's recently clocked 32,500 images taken since I got it in May 2006. I guess the Moon won't have got too far away by the time I get it back! Quote
