The American bomber entered RAF service in 1950 when 87 were lent to the RAF as a stop gap measure during delivery problems with the Avro Lincoln. 84 were returned to the Americans in 1955. One was destroyed in RAF service. 26 January 1954 - An RAF Boeing Washington, WF495, USAF 44-62128, of No. 149 Squadron RAF, disappears during the night en-route from Prestwick to Laagens in the Azores. Aircraft is believed to have come down in Morecambe Bay but after intensive ASR search lasting several days no trace is ever found Two were passed to the Australians In RAF service the B29 was known as the Boeing Washington. The Washington (rather than the Blenheim) probably desreves the title, the RAF's forgotten Bomber. So here are some snippets. Used to test new explosives, and to determine what it takes to blow an Aircraft out of the sky!
