17th August 1942 - 8th Air Force First Raid

First 8th AF heavy bomber raid.

 

12 B-17's attack Rouen-Sotteville marshalling yards in France. The lead aircraft of the group, 'Butcher Shop', was piloted by the Group Commander, Colonel Frank A. Armstrong, and squadron commander Major Paul W. Tibbets (who later flew the Enola Gay on the second last mission of the war ).
