Scammell Pioneer Gallery

Recommended Posts

Few Pioneer pictures Ive scanned in seen over the years. White tank transporter was at Dorset in '95, artillery and blue tank transporter (remains of latter sat in my field) were at Hollycombe auction in '94. TRMU20 is on our lowloader a few years ago. This one should be down at Joe Hirsts rally/open weekend on 5th/6th June all being well.

Here is the blue TRMU30 as it looks today, it was bought (not by us) for the engine which went to China, we were able to salvage the rolling chassis seen here for "scrap value" and a few ancilliary parts before they went into the crusher. I think it made around £500 at auction at Hollycombe. At least part of it survives...

My chassis No is 4260 and it was delivered on 25-6-43 under contract TM 5019 issued on 28-7-1941. According to Pat Ware's book Pioneer which lists contract numbers, chassis No 4977 was built under contract S3164 issued 21 months later. given a rough production of 10 a week 4977 would have been built around October 1944. As for 1944 on the crane they all seem to have this on. Could this be a model number?

happy Scammelling.

Copy of a scale GA drawing any good to you?

Have recovery and tank transporters drawn to scale but with basic dimensions only so the rest needs to be worked out..

Best to get new ones if possible. Many years ago I bought an odd S/H one for £100 which seemed OK and matched the other patterns. Fitted it to the rim and left it inflated to find it had split and was scrap. Also you will need to measure the circumference and try to match them to each side as if they are too diferent it winds the gears up in the casings and they get hot. There are set tolerances which perhaps someone else will know. I had five "identical" tyres that had never been fitted on rims before and their circumferences differed by 5 inches.

Cheers

Is it the 'Fred Flintstone' model (no engine) looks good, or is the camera lying again?

Shame you wouldn't let me tow you back with the militant, you're going to have to 'grow a pair' now you've got a man's truck :)

(For those not in the know, the Scammell was in a yard down the road from Steve, I offered to tow him with the militant, but he was put off by the prospect of rush hour traffic, the lack of brakes, the trip past a police station etc.) :)

I finally moved my Pioneer a week last Saturday, first time on the road for forty years. Therfore this was its roadtest and trip to new storage a good test for my ticker (we wont mention the all to brief outing the previous day). I was initially impressed with my gearchanges untill I discovered that it would pull away in top gear as though it was first!

I would just like to thank Adrian and Edd, whom I had never met before (dont bring up Friday Adrian). They both turned up as aranged one driving in front and the other behind and escorted me to its newfound home. Both a couple of diamonds and a credit to this site, thany you.

No problem, it was a fun morning. We only caused a little traffic and most people seemed to be fascinated by it! Top speed was a massive 13mph! Did set off a car alarm near the start of the journey and a few people stopping and staring as it went by! It does definitely need power steering, or just have an Adrian to assist in tight spots! Now if we can find an up and running gun tractor for me then it would give it some company!:-D

Ed

P.S. Did you get the photos I sent Jerry?
