Smithy
I was reading through some old magazines the other day and one from 2001 had a picture of an Antar in it which was parked up in Gloucestershire. The reg, from what I could work out, was NGY 73, just wondering if it is still around or has it gone into the big scrap heap in the sky! FV1604A
Hi Smithy, I, too, would be interested to know if it survived, 11 years is a long time though. Did the article say which part of Gloucestershire it was in. The number you have read is probably right as it could be a Ministry of Supply allocated vehicle from its delivery in 1954. This mark two with the Meteorite engine was re-registered in the army system later, which is why it is a little odd that it should still have its Ministry plate showing. Anybody in that neck of the woods know more!
Smithy
Here is a scan of said vehicle and information which was with it in the magazine. Credit to Military Machines International, December 2001 edition.

landyandy
i think this was restored by a member on here http://www.pocklingtonpost.co.uk/community/thornycroft-antar-unveiled-by-earl-attlee-at-the-defence-school-of-transport-leconfiedl-east-yorkshire-1-4856197
FV1604A
Sorry LandyAndy, regards to all you guys at Bordon. NGY73 would have been a mark two, this is a mark three and is 12DM85 for those interested in numbers. and yes, our member did a fine job on what was a very large piece of scrap a few months back! Caddy
In case anyone is interested the Antar at Duxford will be brought back to life within the year as the Cent MkIII on the trailer is going. Only problemis that the Antar won't get through the doors with the cent on the back so much moving around. It'll be quite interesting to see that running, and the wonderful dance of vehicles that need to be moved to get the cent off.
Matt W
Taken at Antwerp Docks in (I think) 1992. The Antar belonged to Ord Depot Antwerp and must have been the last one in British Army use. It was off census and was parked in a Romney hut on the docks. Seen here unloading a dead Iraqi T55 from a Scammell Commander with a broken winch. FV1604A
Hi Matt, Well done for finding those pictures, proves that 1987 didn't see the last Antar leave BA service, despite the fact it was off census. This is 12DM76, later becoming Bovington static display, now being restored to its former glory in Cumbria with our friend Paul Brook, at Rusty Trucks. She will be beautiful once again! Regards, Mike.

antar
And if you want to know what its supercharged straight 8 Rolls diesel sounds like on open pipes try this.... Paul, If you need any MK3 exhaust tail pipes I still have some NOS ones "in stock". Brings back happy memories hearing that growl.
paulbrook
Paul, If you need any MK3 exhaust tail pipes I still have some NOS ones "in stock". Brings back happy memories hearing that growl. Its a great sound - I love the supercharger too. Yes please - a pair would be great if I may be so bold, let me know the damage either here or at rustytrucks@mail2world.com and I will square you away. I fabricated the whole stack and guard set up for the Leconfeild one but getting the real deal even for part of the system is excellent. If you have anything else Antar wise I would almost certainly be interested. By the way does anyone have any (blue) dry powder fire extinguishers? I have some but they are shot and I would again like to have as good as possible (ideally serviceable)
antar
PM sent regarding tail pipes, I also have the short pipes which go up to the bottom of the exhaust boxes.
jimmygmc4
Talking of lovely sounds....try this: It's taken me a while to figure out how to crop it to size but hope everyone enjoys it.
FEC
Thanks Ed That brings back memories. The noise the smell and the hard work Antar driving could be. Surprised the Mersey Tunnel let her through, it must have seemed like ages under water. Another Guinness Book of records for Antar's. "The longest under water journey"

Kevin is an absolute star, he is the only person in the world actually running a PETROL ANTAR out to shows under its own power. He probably did not even ask if he could take it through the Mersey tunnel, if you are on the aproach there is not much they can do to stop you ! best getting you through and out of the way. jimmygmc4
Hi Antar You are right there. I had the pleasure of sitting in most of them when they went through re-build, even your old one! Kev is a real star and it was a honour and pleasure to sit in the seat opposite him. I'm glad I figured out how to post it.

The smell sitting in the cab reminds me of the main workshop at Field Lane. I was in the Willy Messerchmitt museum in germany last week, nice private one in EADS and the same smell came back to me. Kev had it all sorted with the tunnel. Police escort etc. It was funny the conversation in the cab about lights.......I had all the lights on the vehicle and trailer switched on. Kev was talking about the police escort I was thinking about the vehicle........listen to the footage. We got there in the end. The best bit was the drag out of the tunnel, we were sat in the power band all 18 and a bit litres working hard. Got to get myself a Mk3

FV1604A
Hi John, Colin and Ed, You will soon be able to read all about every Antar that’s around, then you can take your pick Ed! “The book” is almost finished. Don’t suppose you have a still photograph of it at the Tunnel, Ed, please? Best wishes, and a happy Christmas to all, Mike.
antar
They are like Hens teeth. There is still one in Rush Green Motors but someone supposedly bought it a few years ago and has not collected it yet... strange.
