jmehner Posted November 5 Posted November 5 Thanks, enlarging it supports the Portuguese use, the French did have different registration numbers up front, and, indeed, no flaps on their hats. Quote

paul hocking Posted November 6 Posted November 6 Hi, It looks like a Daimler Ferret, there is one for sale on MIlweb right now, photo below. Turret heights look different, but otherwise the same. cheers Quote

Lovely vehicles and ideal for their task - and one cannot but think rather better than their successors half a century and more later which are much higher, noisier and with open tops; vulnerable to overhead attack from the simplest of munitions (not to mention the weather)! Hardly progress! Quote
fv1609 Posted November 6 Posted November 6 If that is a German WW2 armoured car, then so is this. 2 Quote

Barbe is the French word for beard, so possibly supports the French theory. The Portugese translation would be Barba. Similar but different. Quote
paul hocking Posted November 7 Posted November 7 Hi, the mission statement is excellent. cheers Quote
paul hocking Posted November 7 Posted November 7 Hi, But did the French have Daimler Ferrets at any time ? cheers Quote

Adrian Dwyer Posted November 7 Author Posted November 7 (edited) Rhodesian Armoured Corps. Date unknown. This is also quite interesting re: the cap <https://www.onesixthwarriors.com/threads/rhodesia-and-south-africa-special-forces.31115/page-3> BW photo from <https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=639337046491306&id=140529419705407&set=a.143696252722057> Edited November 7 by Adrian Dwyer photo Quote

As stated above it could have been a French one that was transferred to Portugal. Unfortunately, it is a Mk2, not a Mk4, so Portugal goes out the window again, unless the Mk 4 info is wrong. Since there is what looks like a CCKW 353 in the background, it is not Rhodesian, as they had none. The French, on the other hand, had CCKWs well into at least the early 1980s, and the machine gun in the turret looks like a French AA-52. The Rhodesians used cal .30 Brownings, as did the British army. Having had a look at other Portuguese vehicles, the registration on the front does not conform to their pattern after all (brain fart on my part), so it is most likely French with the tricolore obscured by the angle the photo was taken. The only thing unaccounted for is the Portuguese cap, which could have been a private purchase or exchanged with a Portuguese soldier. Amazing, how a wrongly labeled photo can lead to such an interesting discussion - and still no definitive answer. 😀 1 Quote
