Jerryjeeprichard Posted August 19 Posted August 19 (edited) I thought I would start another post….. this time on the 6kv generator version. There was an abundance of these unit at one time, as everything else now getting harder to locate. Over the last few years I have collected up a few mainly to harvest bits off them for my other trailer restorations. Now I was always of the opinion that this model of trailer was post war. But three of the trailers have brass WD contract number plates, associating them to WW2. There is a mix between 110 and 230v charging units. I have decided to restore one of the trailers to add into the collection. Guess it a case of picking the best one. Few pictures below of the projects I have to go at. REME 245 Posted August 19 Posted August 19 The Coventry Climax Generator models are post-war but on earlier trailer's. Quote
Jerryjeeprichard Posted August 19 Author Posted August 19 Do we know what generator units they were originally fitted with? The engine mounting points haven’t been altered where they bolt into the trailer chassis, so whatever was fitted originally was on the same centres. (If that makes sense) Quote
OzH Posted August 20 Posted August 20 Great collection and some interesting stuff in the background as well.. Quote
Tony Lawrence Posted August 20 Posted August 20 Try and restore a 110v unit as they were the wartime ones that powered the electrical repair and engineers trailers Quote

Some of the trailers pictured above were part of a wider collection of MV bits I bought, alas some of the kit in the yard had already been sold. It only took me 12 months from agreeing the deal to move everything back home. I really would like to get the trailer collection in one place , if nothing else but to photograph a line up. Quote

But I think the difference is KV output The trailer that runs the engineering trailers is the 5kv version. Slightly smaller generating unit, running a 4 cylinder, water cooled Waukesha engine. I have one of these too, restoration started and is posted on HMVF. But progress has stalled until I can get some more parts to progress on the restoration of the engine Then the 6kv ran the air cooled Coventry Climax. Engine, looks they were two voltage power pack options, 110 and 230v, but as REME245 has pointed out this pointed out these power packs could be associated with post war retro fits. If this is the case that the air cooled are post retro fit rebuilds, what engines were fitted in the wartime models. The construction of the chassis for the 5kv and 6kv versions are completely different. So I don’t think it’s a case of they progressed from one to another. I’ve attached a few images below that show some of the differences. The main difference is bath tub vs open frame. There are some smaller differences which I will try and photograph, these are with the A frame and how the axle stubs are mounted. . Edited August 20 by Jerryjeeprichard 2 Quote
