Rootes75 Posted July 17 Share Posted July 17 We have a show around 45 miles away from us and my plan was to take both of our Commers...our restored 1942 30cwt and our unrestored 1944 15cwt. My thought was that it would be a good thing to sort of see a before and after of MV restoration? Well, I've requested a quote to transport them on a low loader from a number of local companies. My issue now is the shear cost of it, my family have been in transport for years and we simply cannot understand the quotes we are getting. Last night took the biscuit. A company we have known for years and have transported military vehicles before for friends, they came back with a quote of £1850 to take the two trucks on one load 45 miles each way!!! And that's from a company we thought were sympathetic to our hobby!! We are seriously considering buying our own transporter for the coming years so that we can take our vehicles further afield. 67burwood Posted July 17 Share Posted July 17 Having your own transport would be the ideal solution but the downside is storing it, maintaining it, insuring it etc.., it all depends on how many times a year you would use it, I recently had a Scammell pioneer moved 65 miles, the driver even brought a telehandler with him to move the pioneer down a tight lane into storage, £600 all in. Are these (to me) outrageous quotes based on the premiss that transporting classic vehicles is considered a highly specialised task, because if these figures are applied to normal freightage it's no wonder everything we buy today is so expensive ! As said, the downside of purchase, storage, maintenance, VOSA testing, VED & insurance would only be viable if your own outfit was employed on a regular basis. Rootes75 Posted July 18 Author Share Posted July 18 If we did go down the route of buying our own it would only be say a 12 tonner, storage then becomes easier for a 4 wheeler. It would comfortably carry our vehicles singularly. My Father has his HGV license and he is pretty keen. We have two MV's and a couple civilian trucks too, my Brother also has two MV's so I could see between us we would get a fair amount of usage out of it. Rootes75 Posted August 14 Author Share Posted August 14 Well, long story short, in the end we found a very sympathetic haulier that will deliver and pick up both lorries for a very reasonable fee. The show was a big success for us and we met so many members of the forum, it was great talking to likeminded people. The Transport really worked out well, the driver helped us load then drop off, the site being difficult too. Then on the Sunday he loaded it all up and he then sat and had dinner with us.
