Jerryjeeprichard Posted October 14 Author Posted October 14 Unfortunately I forgot to take some before pictures. Few snaps during and after.. So two of us have spent the full weekend stripping the sawbench drive shaft. Cleaning/ blasting and painting, re assembly back on the saw. I just don’t know where the time goes.. I must admit there was little head scratching on how the bearings were fitted and whether or not we would get the drive pulley off without cracking. In the end no major issues. Great little system to work on. 3 Quote

Jerryjeeprichard Posted October 20 Author Posted October 20 Looks like an interesting auction. The liner saw bench shown is the more common version with petter engine. One with the JAP engine seems to be the more elusive version. Ironically I managed to pick another one up this last week. I bought this literally for the engine cowl. 3 Quote
Jerryjeeprichard Posted October 20 Author Posted October 20 Little more progress on the saw bench trailer. Front tow hitch assembled and fitted. Bed bolted on. Blades cleaned up and fitted. Castings for the saw guide stripped, these were stuck solid, I did try heating up with the gas axe, just couldn’t get the heat into it. So resorted to putting the castings into the log burner for a few hours. Worked an absolute treat. 3 Quote

Jerryjeeprichard Posted October 30 Author Posted October 30 Kids half term. So managed to get some time off work few hours here and their in the workshop. Started again back on the engine.. Now that I have a second engine I have a few options. Again my plan is to build one really good unit out of the two. Removing the drive pulley turned out to be a pain in the rear to remove. Tried heat, pullers, different pullers. Some head scratching. Eventually fell back to using little V jacks, eventually managed to get the pulleys off. 3 Quote

Jerryjeeprichard Posted November 1 Author Posted November 1 (edited) Moving forward on the engine restoration. Stripped the engine back, decided not to fully strip, so without taking the crank out I’ve cleaned, degreased, changed all the gaskets, finished off the day getting its first coat of primer. I’ve also had to get the lug holes milled out on the sump. As the engine tensions on the trailer version differ slightly than the fitment method on the trolley version. Next job is to remove the barrel in readiness for blasting. Edited November 1 by Jerryjeeprichard 3 Quote
Jerryjeeprichard Posted November 3 Author Posted November 3 Steady progress today. Lots of little jobs ticked off. Engine top coated. Flywheel re attached. Damaged Flywheel starter dog drilled out and new pin manufactured. Re welded the broken lug on exhaust manifold, drilled and tapped out, new studs fitted. More painted parts reassembled onto the trailer frame. 4 Quote
Jerryjeeprichard Posted November 4 Author Posted November 4 I couldn’t resist. I’ve sat the engine in the frame tonight. Feels like it’s now coming together. 7 Quote
Adrian Dwyer Posted November 5 Posted November 5 Looking so smart! Now you are just about done, have you considered this type of trailer for your next project? [from <https://hmvf.co.uk/topic/45791-raf-beaverette-with-strange-plough/page/3/#comment-512599>] Quote
Jerryjeeprichard Posted November 5 Author Posted November 5 Thank you for the kind comments. Now that’s a niche trailer……. I’m not sure on what my next project will be… Feel I should probably get some of my jeep projects started. So I at least have something to move the trailers around. 1 Quote
Jerryjeeprichard Posted November 9 Author Posted November 9 Pushing on with the engine. The rings in the engine were seized, I attempted to unpick them. Which resulted in snapping each one in turn. Hunt began for replacement rings. As luck would have it managed to locate a brand new piston. So barrel blasted, painted, valves ground in, bore deglazed with honing tool. Valve clearance was/ is pain to set up. Resulted in needing to grind some of the valve stem to get required gaps. 6 Quote
Jerryjeeprichard Posted December 2 Author Posted December 2 Small update on the trailer restoration. Few other projects have taken priority recently. I’ve had some steel folded up ready for gladding the front toolbox . 3 Quote
Jerryjeeprichard Posted Sunday at 07:23 PM Author Posted Sunday at 07:23 PM Few hours in the shed today. Had a good session tinning up the tool locker on the front of the saw bench. Between that and drinking tea and sat with my feet up in front of the fire…😆 Now ready for disassembly cleaning up. Primer and top coat. Before reassembly and riveting. 6 Quote
Jerryjeeprichard Posted Tuesday at 08:32 PM Author Posted Tuesday at 08:32 PM Couldn’t resist. I wanted to do a dry fit the tool bin. In order to do this I need to refit the engine cover. Then I thought while I’m here I will try a dry fit the liner signage. All in all a productive few hours. 3 Quote
Adrian Dwyer Posted yesterday at 11:05 AM Posted yesterday at 11:05 AM Very impressive. As a style choice, may I suggest mudguards in RE BD red?! Somewhere I've seen a wartime photo of a similar bench cutting timber for shafting down to a UXB. Just a though . . . (though it looks very good in green!) Quote
