johann morris
Morning, I am just reading the Ospray Panzer Iv book and it contains an after action report from Infantry Division Grossdeutschland, dated March 1943. The report states that "The turret of the T34 is no longer made from one piece but is assembled from individual parts. The armour of many tanks consists of a steel plate 1cm, a filling of 6cm cast iron and other material and again a 1cm steel plate". Has anyone come across this before, does anyone have more information? It seems a curious construction technique and must have added to the production time. MatchFuzee
I don't know if this is includes an appliqué layer on the inside of the turret. 'Identification of T-34 variants can be complicated. Turret castings, superficial details, and equipment differed between factories; new features were added in the middle of production runs, or retrofitted to older tanks; damaged tanks were rebuilt, sometimes with the addition of newer-model equipment and even new turrets. Some tanks had appliqué armor made of scrap steel of varying thickness welded on to the hull and turret; these tanks are called s ekranami ("with screens"), although this was never an official designation for any T-34 variant.' https://military.wikia.org/wiki/T-34_variants
