OzH
So, I think I've run into a problem that I had overlooked until now While disassembling the trailer, I managed to shear all but one of the the spring hanger bolts, even with heat, penetrating oil and lots of gentle persuasion, they all (bar one) sheared they are a 1/2" BSF grease bolt, does anyone have any idea where I could come by 5, preferably 6 of them? I have bought a load of 3.1/2" bolts so I can continue re-assembly, but in the long term I'd like the correct grease bolts.. Any help welcome.. OzH
Some evening work this week on the springs, I will replace the bolts with the correct carriage bolts, on order will swap them once they arrive. No idea what these are called, thin brass tubes that have perished And, re-assembled one set of brakes Compare with how these were, only things I had to replace were the oil seals and the grease!

simon king
Are spring hanger grease bolts another term for shackle pins? If so, I ended up having some made for me by a local machine shop as I couldn’t find a suitable source for replacements

64EK26
Hi You can get the shackle bolts from the states see https://www.currieenterprises.com/CE-91128 I will see what I have in the shed, but I think they are a bit larger. Are your shackle bolts 1/2" in diameter , or is that the thread on the end The 10cwt trailer parts list is not very helpful in the size of the shackle bolts Cheers Richard
OzH
Hi Richard, they should be 1/2” all the way through. All I’ve found online are 9/16” with a 1/2” thread so just to big Saying that, those have found look to be correct.. We have a couple of good vintage car/restoration places near by, I’ll try them before I buy the ones from the US.. Thanks for the pointer.. OzH
Carriage bolts arrived and are installed, small detail but would have bugged me..! Springs and axle re-assembled And back on wheels again.. I have a set of 1/2" bolts ready to go round to one of the local fabricator/machine shops but these will do for now.. On a side note, I managed to win a ropey old T plate on ebay - not cheap..! Some very careful use of paint stripper, sanding, masking and painting has come up OK. I just need to polish out the reflectors some how..
simon king
Brasso and then toothpaste can probably be used to polish up the reflectors, and any imperfections left can be sorted by brushing on some silicon floor polish like Pledge Future or the current equivalent. This will dry to provide a smooth glossy surface filling in the imperfections or minor scratches as it dries.

My daughter makes resin jewelry, I was thinking that she may be able to put a thin clear layer over the top, but I may just try this first... OzH
18 months+ since I have been able to look at the trailer. Last weekend I finally got to take the cover off and mover it back into the garage.. The timber and pot noodle pots were there to help the cover not to wear too badly..! OzH
I've managed a few evenings working on the trailer, got the brakes and linkage back on I only have one brake return spring. Does anyone have a spare or can anyone advise on what I should be looking for when ordering a replacement? OzH
Also, lots on the wiring. I believe this was mostly done post war, but I still think it looks good The original wiring was still on it when I got it but rotten through, I've simply replaced the wire, NOS lights, junction box and switches Tested it all last night on a 12v battery, all working as expected, well happy! OzH
Details, details, details... I noticed when looking at photo's I took as I was dismantling the trailer that the side frontboard and skid plate bolts had hex nuts, not square. Both of these areas use machine screws, round head or recessed, rather than coach bolts... Could I live with this? Turns out, no! I've used M6 coach bolts and nuts throughout, but M6 hex nuts are far to small so I had to find Whitworth machine screws and nuts Done now, so I can breath again! I do wonder sometimes..!
RayT
Looking good. The bolts down the side are slotted dome heads with nuts. The timbers should have a chamfer on them on one side only.

OzH
Had a bit of time last weekend so finished off the woodwork, had to trim down a lot of coach bolt but now happy with how it looks The mud guards need some work on them before being ready to bolt back on but next job will be to get some paint on it
RayT
Looking good. Personally I never want to see a coach bolt ever again after doing mine 😆
