Wanted. Eager Beaver CAV Starter motor

Recommended Posts

According to the parts book it's a CAV 24v,   CA45F24-3M.   LV6MT4/2920-99-811-0170.

I had to get mine repaired when the shaft sheared due to engaging when the engine was turning. It's a standard type and most specialists should be able to fix it. If I can find the name of the repairer I used I'll post it.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the replys. The prices you have found for new ones are even more frightening than I suspected they might be.

I decided I would have a look at it myself and see if I could find the fault, - symptoms were clicking but no rotation.

Found that the problem was crud / rust on the main shaft where the sleeve that actuates the solenoid contacts is supposed to slide along, this preventing the contacts from "making"  That in it's self is relatively easy to fix, however, because of the contacts not "making" fully, over time they have become pitted and burnt.

So I may have shot myself in the foot so to speak, as I doubt if any of the repairers will be happy to accept a box of bits to put back together again, nor I imagine, would they be happy to supply a set of new contacts without getting the job of doing a re-conditioning of the starter.

Anyway, I will try first to source new contacts and see how it goes from there.

Thanks again for your input, I'll let you know how I get on...

Dear All,

Last year I repaired a contactor on an electric forklift by silver soldering a replacement contact in place.  You might find repair instructions in a "Power EMER" or Clive may have covered this.  If he has not he may well have some literature available to share. At one point this type of starter was quite common and a similar one for a different engine might produce some parts.  The only parts that MIGHT be different could be the field coils and the rotating armature.

Hi,

There is a brand new one, ex-MoD stock, in Scotland and they are asking £210 plus VAT. That is a sensible price. It looks like the starter was also used on the JCB 410 forklift (that replaced Eager Beaver) as I recall the JCB had a similar Perkins engine to the EB.
