Ian43
Hello All, I'm currently working in an old T2 hanger 'somewhere in Southern England' and there is a large 'T' shaped pit in the floor covered with heavy metal plates. Having removed one of the smaller plates there appears to be a large Yellow steel box, possibly a trolley, in the centre pit. Any help with identifying what it is and its use would satisfy my curiosity. I've attached some photos. Thanks in advance. Ian.

oats and barley
Give us a clue if we knew where it was, we might know what was parked there, interesting how the plates are different sizes not designed for all being taken up at the same time, looks like a jacking system Edited January 31, 2019 by oats and barley spelling mistake
Surveyor
Are the ends concreted shut or are there ducts out? Looking initially I thought of a service duct hence question Also following on from post above, what was based there, how old the hanger, as if built at time of hanger it may help. There is a guide to tell how old the hanger http://www.rafmonument.nl/_files/file/raf-hangars.pdf Edited January 31, 2019 by Surveyor Found Link
RAFMT
I don't recall the floor pits being standard on T2s when built, but it's been a while since I did my hangar research. If memory serves this document is mostly concerned with the structure, but its interesting nonetheless https://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/20121019162516/http://www.mod.uk/NR/rdonlyres/80BF05BD-926E-40D3-9BD4-750FBF9CF556/0/fs16.pdf EDIT: Looking at the photos again, those pits almost certainly look like later additions, and weren't put in when the floor was originally laid. So the location might help us here. Edited January 31, 2019 by RAFMT
Ian43
The hanger is located at Dunsfold, Surrey. This aerodrome had a post war association with Hawker then BAE. I couldn't see any vents in the pit but I only looked into one part of it and the end was concrete. Edited February 2, 2019 by Ian43

ruxy
I suspect it is a hydraulic oil reservoir for a central control jacking system , quicker and less hassle than conventional portable tripod type aero-jacks..
