War & Peace Revival - 2018

I do get the strong feeling that under the new ownership, the show has changed from an MV enthusiasts event that attracts the public to a public show that attracts some MV people.  And I think this is deliberate, presumably in line with the Company's business plan.  I found it still a premier MV show, but I can see that it will only take a small drop-off in the support of the MV owner community to precipitate a real collapse in MV (and trader) attendance.  Which is fine, I guess, if that is the direction in which it IS being steered and this may benefit the "our community" shows.......may ALREADY be happening, I think.  Can't stay the same forever, I suppose.

When I first started attending W&P for the week with my military vehicle it was a great holiday with every chance of picking up those much needed and hard to find spares.

Unfortunately with the way things have gone I feel that the best hunting grounds for spares are:

The Dallas Digout

Stoneliegh

Malvern

If no luck, have you seen this?

More kit than you need but you would have spares or some to sell.

On a close look I can't see the pulleys either.

As it is being advertised as "A rarely seen complete guying kit", is it worth contacting the seller to confirm the contents of the kit or lack of?

Brain dead at moment never thought of that at moment, i need to look again at it

Can’t say I saw a big increase in toilets, America’s field seemed to have some at the top which were not there last year, but again they werent the trailer units of previous years but the Porto loo type. Not sure if they were the ‘controversial’open trap type though !

We are squeezed up on outer Monktons, Americas was closed (at capacity) by Tuesday morning and there was camping overflow into the support car park area. Only 6 public portaloos in the whole of our field and 5 were overflowing with sh1t by Wednesday night so we set up a driving rota to take the kids to the main loos in the brick building which still worked. It's hot, it's dusty, the drinking water is labelled not fit for drinking unless boiled but the show must go on and the atmosphere is brilliant.

I was parked up in Medway field not far from where the toilets were marked up on the map - except there were no toilets there. While it is true that most of the portaloo public toilets were disgusting, I don't get too hung up about toilets if I have and old plastic milk bottle and bucket in my tent for emergency use. I can ruff it a bit as I used to be in the Army in 1970-80's and we did what bears do.

As for the show there were a few new vehicles I have not seen before but somehow the how has lost something of its soul. Vehicle numbers are certainly down on the old days and there was not enough heavy armour. The show ground use also seems a bit odd in that Medway field is massive and yet hardly used in comparison to Monkton's, and had vehicles spread all round the edges far in to the distance which I guess no 'normal' visitor ever got round in a day. Okay, I know Medway was marked out as a Helipad and area for parachutists but surely if it was suitably set out with toilet facilities and green camping minus support vehicles during the show open hours, it would be better display area. I happen to think that the reenactors stuffed in behind the current arena lose their appeal, so would be better being well spaced round Medway field!

Incidentally were kids on motor bikes and quad bikes supposed to be banned?  And with the weather so warm and grass so dry was it a good idea to have wood fires at WPR?

I think they're just being careful about the water due to the heat.  I must have drunk several litres over two days with no effects, just let it run cold first.

I agree entirely about the children on quads etc, there was a very young lad trundling around during the day on Tuesday.  He was being sensible but I still don't think he should have been there at all - what happens if he hits something/someone?  Mind you, some of the staff golf carts seemed to be aiming for a world speed record, so not much of an example ...

Not sure the MVT would ever take it on, it could go back to being an IMPS show, but I suspect they stopped running it due to the huge administration required ( I am sure someone will enlighten us as to why their involvement ended ?) most of the big MVT shows I used to attend seemed to end due to this, (the  Essex And Hampshire mvt shows which are both now run privately I believe).

I was a MOP at W+P long before I owned a mv and as a collector it was the highlight of my year, for as long as I’ve been going both this forum and the re-enactment forums have all had something to say on how the show is run and from memory year on year it’s been much the same gripes (even during the Cadman era), toilets, showers, kids on quads, the NLBA, music, mud, dust, cost of exhibiting etc, all have appeared regularly as comments. But every year we come back.

however I have to say it is noticeable that in the last two years the quality of the show has gone down, less trade stands, less exhibitors, even the entertainment (no jive aces, the wartime fashion shows etc).

Been here since Sunday. Those moaning about not enough armour maybe haven’t explored the site enough. There’s the Challenger, 2 Centurions, T34, Super Sherman, Stug, lots of 432s, CVRTs, OT90, dozens of half tracks to name a few.

It’s been very hot and dusty but the main toilets and showers have been good all week. Away from the main roads it’s quite relaxed. When the public go home the roads come alive, then there’s Medway field with everyone running flat out down the back straight.

Trader numbers are down and prices are up, but if they want to sit at home and do website orders you can’t force them to come.

I've just returned from 6 days at the show due to having to attend a wedding on Saturday and I would say it was one of the best yet for us. I have no interest in the contents of the stalls since I rarely venture into them. I also have no interest in public attendance figures since we go to have a social, not to display as such. I suspect most day visitors don't realise that the show comes alive from 5pm til late, with informal and organised site convoys and general driving about, parties, silliness and socialising. That's why we continue to attend.

We thought vehicle numbers were considerably up on the last few years - certainly not up to those of the 'good old days' but moving in the right direction. There were a few nuggets such as the Liberty B and the Guy Ant, limber and gun as well as four Pioneers.

I think the new organiser has learned from some of his past mistakes and hopefully will continue to do so.

Long live War and Peace!

As most people will know, War & Peace evolved from the annual IMPS club show that was first at Tenterden and after a few years at the Whitbread Hop Farm. In 1994 it was renamed as Back from the Beaches, followed in 1995 by the Victory Show.

We then came up with a new name for 1996 (courtesy of either Nigel Hay or Keith Palmar) of War & Peace. It was still the IMPS club show and our Events Secretary, one Rex Cadman really had the bit between his teeth and continued to try to enlarge the show. In this he was rather successful and by the late 1990's the show had grown to three days and then five days. It was then we (as the IMPS committee) decided the show was too big for an amateur group and Rex took over the show professionally.

IMPS were paid a retainer and provided the core of the organising team but the responsibilities (and potential liabilities) were removed. IMPS members still retained the rights of a club show, namely free entry and it remained part of the club entity. The rest is history.

This is the first year since the beginning of the show (35 years) that I have not brought a vehicle to W&P. I went as a MOP on Wednesday and to the IMPS evening on Thursday where many of us, old and new members reminisced. Even Rex was there, having had to pay £20 entry. Hopefully in the future things will get better.

I also agree with the comments above concerning booking in! I arrived before 8am and had to park up and wait for the booking desk and the gates to open. Fair enough but when I got to the booking procedure every vehicle had to park in lanes, and owners were not allowed to get a pass until their vehicle was at the front of their lane, so I was constantly starting up my MV and moving forward a few feet. It would have been much better if we could have the booking desk in the big field where we were held before 8am, park anywhere and as individuals join a queue of people to get our passes, which would be fairer, as vehicles that came later than most of us, were able to rush the gate at 08.01 am and get in to the three lanes for booking before me.

As with all shows there are those who gripe continually and always will whatever the organiser do won’t satisfy those who are looking to find fault. To some the show will never be as good as it was in the old days when whoever you like was running it. For me it would be back before any W&P back to the show at Tenterden and its preserved railway along with a friendly informality but things develop, move on, evolve, and grow into what W&P has become. I’m not a fan of job’s worth’s who perpetuate petty officialdom found them at every show and W&P I’ve been to exhibiting or visitor they were there only this year only witness one in action while a vehicle was being booked in.  As for stall’s I/we tend to get our spares whatever by contacts built over the years as well as off the net seldom by chance off a stall at a show. But I’m always looking and occasionally pick something up as I did this year, as others had done on the same stall only the stall holder was much to intent on a mobile phone conversation about fixed speed cameras, momentarily stopping talking to tell those of us waiting to pay he had a call and moved away so he could hear continuing say he wasn’t doing anything special at that moment. What I’d chosen from his assorted bits I left on the seat of the chair he’d just vacated as others who’d been waiting longer than I had done. The guy’s we know on the stalls all said the same, yes they paid a lot for the spot and people were looking but few buying. I enjoyed the show the two days there, meet friends I’d not seen in a while, put the world to rights, bemoaned the passing of the good old days when ex military vehicle could be bought for sensible monies such as the Dodge I bought for thirty quid and wishing I still had it along with any one of my QL’s, Dingo, Munga, K6, K9, Mk-1 432 with fully equipped Peak turret. Those were the days  as these are the days of someone else’s youth enjoy it and move on to next year and many of the comments on here now will reappear then .
