WillH_zil131 Posted March 11, 2018 Posted March 11, 2018 Hello I'm new. I've recently bought a Zil 131 and its a lot of fun. Its developed a rattle I think around the radiator or one of the belts and cannot discern where its coming from. It's also got a coolant heating temp light showing. Little film of the rattle here: https://wetransfer.com/downloads/8d5d596c3fa1978e324e6e820801ea3820180311133300/3f32dc095852be75256cf1827022380b20180311133300/dbeca7 Any thoughts or help would be gratefully received. Lauren Child Posted March 11, 2018 Posted March 11, 2018 While I can see why you’re worried from the video, my experience of Zils is the only bit not rattling is the steering wheel (while you are holding it). Quote
WillH_zil131 Posted March 11, 2018 Author Posted March 11, 2018 Haha - thats good advice! Ive also got a coolant over heat light on now... Hmm. Quote
WillH_zil131 Posted March 11, 2018 Author Posted March 11, 2018 fan seems fine... It also happens before the engine is running, as you turn the ignition and its turning over. Quote
Lauren Child Posted March 11, 2018 Posted March 11, 2018 Not an expert on Zils by any means, but possibly water pump? Quote
WillH_zil131 Posted March 12, 2018 Author Posted March 12, 2018 Yes that would make good sense actually given a few of the other symptoms. Will investigate! Quote
robin33ba07 Posted March 12, 2018 Posted March 12, 2018 You can grease the water pump ,it might eliminate one rattle ? Quote
Kiscsepi Posted March 12, 2018 Posted March 12, 2018 hello. I speak a little English. I can not watch the video, maybe I can help. do you upload the video to another location? I have a Ural 4320 truck. Quote
Tony B Posted March 12, 2018 Posted March 12, 2018 (edited) Does the rattle sound as soon as the ignition is turned on, or does the coolant warning come on when you turn on the ignition and stay on when the engine starts? Trying to work out if the tempratue warning is wrong because you know it is on when the engine is cold having just started. That would suggest a wiring fault or the temprature sensor is not working. Stupid as it sounds, try putting a bit of butter or margarine under the fan belt, see if that stops it temporaily. Edited March 12, 2018 by Tony B Quote
wally dugan Posted March 12, 2018 Posted March 12, 2018 (edited) if the noise is there when cranking it over why not remove the fan belt then if it disappears it has to be one of the items not turning also does the radiator have a cowl once we found that the cowl had come loose and caused it to rattle only a sugestion Edited March 12, 2018 by wally dugan Quote
WillH_zil131 Posted April 26, 2018 Author Posted April 26, 2018 We found this in the end. Not what we were expecting at all. We began by removing section by section anything that could be rotating - water pump, fan belt and so on. When this was fruitless we determined it was coming from the engine. We took the carburettor off when looking down into the engine there was a rod that had used to drive the mechanical fuel pump. At some stage it must have bounced out of its slot started to rattle about. Problem solved. Quote
