I'm also looking for the name of the thing, the name of the vehicle, the location & appx date.

 

But a good first response. I have googled for the image, not found it so I hope it is not out there to give the game away :-)

Neither of those things Tony, but from what I've red it was quite dusty there, so time to reveal a bit more.

looks like the vehicle is a Commer Q4 and I know some of them were out at Woomera and Maralinga. Looking again I think it is a Q4 tipper chassis adapted to raise the frame the rocket or whatever is mounted on.

They men look like they may not be service personnel, so this is a government test programme.

OK, one stage forward! But Woomera did a lot of testing of various flying objects. So the assumption is , so far, that is a missile. Could it be a drone? Interesting take on how the place got its name. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woomera_(spear-thrower)

Yes I am sure you are right, this was a private venture being part of a Ministry of Supply research programme.
