Charge Posted April 1, 2017 Share Posted April 1, 2017 Hello to all.Great to be included in this forum!I was looking around the web for info on a recent perchase of a military vehicle my wife thought was cute!! and found HMVF!Once i got it home, I realised that somethin old, rare (for the UK) and military is quite dificult to get to grips with for even the most basic maintenance requirements.So without hoping to sound too one sided, was looking to see who knows what about the original 1950's Mowags.This place seems a mine of information, so some good advice (hopefully not to tell me not to buy it, its too late!) and an eye on local event to attend in it would be great!Looking forward to many happy years hopfully of sub 40 mph travel in something you dont see every day!Cheers Charge (Just thought, my avatar was started 20 years ago on turbo/super 'charging' forums. Thing is, first thing I do when i buy anything is go through it for peace of mind, so want to change all oils and fluids filters and plugs before tackling the weeping diff and O/S rear leak which is either brake cylinder or axle seal. Fuel gauge does not work (could be electrical?) and it needs a new exhaust that has been lashed up with overwelds and paste. Plus tyres are perished. Anyone know what Dodge the engine came out of, if the running gear also was used in the Dodge, and if so where the best place to buy the parts I need is? Also need to register it in the UK. Have read posts saying its easy, but reading the V55 seems anything but! Apart from that, everything else is in remarkable condition for 62 years old! Tony B Posted April 2, 2017 Share Posted April 2, 2017 (edited) Dodge parts, Jeeparts or Dalla's Autos. Brake bits Pastparts. If it does use wheel cylinders for brakes by Dodge, they will be handed. Describe engine and measure length of block, that will give the info if it is a Dodge engine. A lot of the VL55 such as type approval number, don't apply as it way before the age. If it's 62 years old, well before !st January 1960, it will be MOT and Tax exempt. But wise to get a friendly examiner to look it over makes sure you haven't missed anything. I did read 5w30 oil was the stuff to use, but others look towards a traditional Castrol oil. What would you recommend? And do you know of any other Mowag's around. Tony B Posted April 3, 2017 Share Posted April 3, 2017 You have just raised the Red Flag of arguments. :-D I use Halford's 20/50 Classic oil in mine, and haven't had any problems. Valvoline also do a 20/50, which I've used in the past, but the Halfords seems to hold the pressure better when the engine is hot. I think what you meant was a Straight 30 weight oil.
