Guest matt
With all the discussion of CCKW's of late I was just wondering which cab type people prefer, open or closed, and why? Matt.
tyler
Open, just looks better especialy with a gun ring, and it would fit in my storage, also open top driving.
Nick Bombini
I like the open cab more. It just feels more military and I like the free air conditioning with how hot it gets here in the summer .
Jack
The soft cab for me. I just adore the look and the practicalilty of them most of been wonderful for the armies using them. You must really cook in the closed cabs as I have always driven with the doors off and the cab still gets hot
abn deuce
Open for the same reasons mentioned above .
R Cubed
Same goes for me, as all of the above apply. Also the open type cab is wider than the closed by about a foot, I have a closed cab rubber mat in my open cab and it is short of each side by about 6 inches. You can get 3 adults in the open cab if you are friendly dont thnik you could do that in the closed cab and get the doors shut !!!!!!!! N.O.S.
Closed You don't get wet Lovely shape, the truck needs curves to balance utility look Great acoustics (if you like drivetrain music) When it's hot outside, great cooling breeze with screen up and windows down You can rest your elbow on door when window down Real cosy with 3 in cab (girlies always sit in middle....) Am I the only one?........
Jack
Still open cab for me. can do more with them - windscreen up or down, canvas on or off, get 3 of you in the front + a dog, less glass to polish  and not so flipping noisy........ Hard cabs looks pretty cool with their windscreen open! N.O.S.
You must really cook in the closed cabs as I have always driven with the doors off :schocked: Well, I've NEVER had to take the doors off mine  The dog stands on the lap of whoever is in the middle and has his front paws on the bonnet through the open window - you've just got to grab the right gear stick!!! Alternatively a mobile kennel conversion is available for the Ben Hur....
Lawson
well i have a closed cab but i love them both..both have there advantages..soft cab has more room and is nicer in on hot days great for mv enthusiasts as thats when they are driven mostly in nice weather...however with the front window open on my closed cab theres a lovely breeze that keep you cool even on the hottest of days.. and you never get hungery as there always lots of flys to eat on the way...but they both look cool tho i think closed and open cabs as all jimmys do....but having said all this if i had to go to war and drive one on a daily basis it would be a closed cab for me every time cos its lovely and cosy in my cab when its pouring with rain and cold outside..and jack did look quite cold and wet on the way to the purbeck rally lol... :shake:
Jack
Suppose it would be to predictable for me to say that only real men drive softcabs :dunno: :dunno: :dunno:

R Cubed
Suppose it would be to predictable for me to say that only real men drive softcabs :dunno: :dunno: :dunno: Ah but also to add to that, is that Real men dont care what the weather is like rain or snow ect, If I needed to go out in my truck I would go ;-)
N.O.S.
Looks like I might need to convert my closed cab to an open cab. Can anyone advise exactly where to cut the door posts and rear panel? (I don't want to go to the expense of buying a complete open cab assy)
abn deuce
Check out the Closed cab convertion to open in "Wheels and Tracks" issue #22 on pages 31 and 34 to get that closed/open cab look just right !!! Gives it that 1940's convertable top look that is guaranteed to draw all the Girls away from the Jeep's and Dodge's.

HWade
Well although the GMC shopvan Iam restoring came off the production line with an open cab,I am looking for a closed cab to put on it, I just think a workshop bodied gmc looks better with a closed cab. abn deuce
Each design has something going for it ,while the closed cab is warmer and dryer in rain and winter but noisier out on the road at speed and bit less head room and can be locked , the open cab has more shoulder and head room and better ventilation in the summer and in parades , it doesn't seem as noisy as there is less metal around you to bounce it off of . To me the open cabs of all Military Vehicles just look right , the closed cabs reflect more of the civilian origins a conversation and not a purpose built design. here's a longer ride along in a open cab CCKW Something went wrong... shopnut
I bought a closed cab shop van a few years ago, which has still to take to the road!, I discovered it started life with a open cab, so to keep it all original, a deal was done and the closed cab was swapped with a mint open cab, but now I have had a change of heart and think the shop van looks better with a closed cab, so at this time I am restoring a closed cab in my home garage, and at some point, hopefully, will fit this restored back on the shop van, but.................. <a href="http://s25.photobucket.com/albums/c88/shopnut/?action=view¤t=DSCN0913.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c88/shopnut/DSCN0913.jpg" border="0" alt="CCKW Closed Cab.
