greyhound32122
thank you doug it is great to have a decent amount of time off to be able to get loads done to the truck. succeeded in getting the range box in bits today, one selector shaft was seized and every thing on the out put shaft was rusted up from the flange nut right down to the bearing. generally very good condition all the gears and bearings appear to be very good so it should just be a clean/paint reassemble exercise. tomorrow will check what is good or bad and start cleaning & painting.
greyhound32122
a lot has happened since my last post the range box is know back together and installed into the truck, both air tanks are fitted and have got the rear wheels fitted so 1531 is know much easier to move about know. also farmed a lot of the painting out as it was easier to get all the small fiddly parts sprayed than waste a lot of short day light hours painting with a brush. the header tank has come back from being repaired as it has been frosted in it's past life and had a 5 -6" long crack that has know been welded up and just needs a few little jobs doing to it then it can be painted as well. there is a load of small parts that i can get on and fit then ounce i have tidied up the parts i have painted i can move onto the engine and winch. at the point were every part that goes on makes a big difference to the look of the truck know which is such a great feeling, also today marks exactly 1 year since i started taking her apart. regards sam
greyhound32122
making a lot of progress on 1531 know, all the wheels are built up and fitted, the range box is finished bar fitting the new top cover. the hand brake mechanism is mostly in i just need to get the shoes/pads lined and fitted. almost at the stage of choosing to start either the winch or the engine. hopefully tomorrow will be another good day so should have another up date coming shortly. regards sam

greyhound32122
lots more progress on 1531 i have pretty much all the air lines fitted to the truck know part from the winch clutch and trailer hand valve lines. as the truck is generally up together. know i have made a start on the winch which luckily is not seized apart from the 2 control levers but a bit of heat and they are starting to move. the 400 odd feet of winch cable is not to bad but i will be putting a whole new cable on as it is not something i like to assume is going to be ok when winching hard. aiming to turn the winch around in about 2 - 3 weeks then my sights are set on sorting out the Rolls Royce C6 engine so starting to get into the interesting bits know. regards sam

greyhound32122
blimey done a lot since the last update though hasn't felt like it with work. right the winch is mostly back together part from the control levers need fitting and the drive from the aux box needs painting and fitting then the winch as a whole will be finished. pull 1531 out side to fit the winch and trial the replacement bumper. new linings riveted to the original break shoes and installed to the truck then adjusted up. front bumper and rails cleaned up and are now all away being blasted and painted by a friend. while waiting for a load of parts to be painted the rolls is now stood up with gear box removed. the gear box is mechanically very good and was full of clean oil with no water in it which is a huge relief. 1st gear has had a harsh life as the teeth have been ground away welded up then ground back though being a training truck that is probably no surprise. ounce the gearbox and pressure plate were removed yet more evidence of the trucks hard life were to come to light. the clutch disc centre has been bottoming out on the flywheel crank bolts thus worn the heads down. also with the pressure plate removed the clutch disc friction material doesn't even touch the flywheel at all!! so when the clutch is engaged the pressure plate is bending the clutch disc, so the clutch disc is no good and the pressure plate has loads of hot spots and star cracking so they will both be replaced. looking at the flywheel closely it has been messed with as it has a steel ring welded in so some one went to a lot of trouble to machine the fly wheel out then weld a ring in which i guess is not very hard as it has a 3/16" wear lip which enplanes why the clutch disc is bottoming out on the crank shaft/flywheel bolts. even some of the welds have clearly failed to so glad i pulled it all apart as it would have made a royal mess if i drove it as it was. if any one has come across this practise before would be interesting to hear of your stories as i assume this was done by the MOD? moving swiftly on have removed all ancillaries from the engine ready to start cleaning it up to paint, will be compression testing the cylinders to see what they are like and managed to get the injectors out with a heel bar and a piece of pipe. almost rearranged my good looks trying to get the injectors out but got there in the end think i was very lucky they all came out and the brass sleeves remained in the heads. so will get them reconditioned locally. as i am at the cleaning engine phase any recommendations or advice on best way to clean the engine ready for paint? have scraped the worst of the oily crud off so got to deal with the multi layers of paint and general greasy residue left on the block. regards sam
greyhound32122
pulled the exhaust manifold yesterday and the ports are clogged with soot and oil so thought valve stem seals had failed so heads off and turns out 1 2 3 5 6 are completely polished smooth in the bores but 4 has a really good cross hatch in it. shall drop the sump and pull the pistons and see what the bearings are like but either way it is having a full rebuild know as i don't want to 2nd guess my self after putting it back in the truck. dgrev
Hello. Back when you were doing the springs, I notice you took care to preserve some yellow paint on one end. Would I be correct in thinking that the springs are only allowed to be installed facing a certain direction? If so, why is this? greyhound32122
good evening Doug the rear springs can be fitted either way round. there is a part number or some thing painted on the spring but they have applied the yellow so it stands out. i could have just painted over it but decided it would be a shames as it has survived for so long. regards sam
dgrev
Hello Sam. Was worth asking in case there was something peculiar about the bogie spring arrangement that made it different from regular eliptical springs and meant they had to face only one direction. greyhound32122
sorry for lack of updates but been so busy with work and spending a lot of evenings working on the T just havn't had time to update so this is about 3 months work or so. firstly the main gear box and auxiliary selector is all finished and ready to be fitted to the C6, the Rolls is well on it's way back together know with new big & main bearings fitted and heads re installed. i torqued it all down properly tonight and have set to rocker shafts up so it is mostly cleaning and painting know engine wise. sorted the winch cable tensioner out which i have had to make all new pins, rollers, nuts etc as it was just a big block of rust but know it operates like a swiss watch.

greyhound32122
the last 2 months have shot past and had completely forgotten about this thread so better bring every one up to speed before christmas. the Rolls Royce C6 is know running and sounding fantastic first attempts to start were difficult which lead to having the injectors and the injector pump rebuilt, the radiator is finished bar the brush guard. need to sort the clutch out then the gear box can go in and the truck will be drive able again. started with the large amount of tin work like running boards and battery boxes etc a lot of which is going to have to be replaced. the cab is coming along at a fare pace know and looks like it will be ready for February time. looked at the ballest box today and after removing the rusty scale it turned out to be in far worse condition than first thought so going down the route of building a new one. the plan is to have the truck ready to drive to Welland at the end of July but if not it will go to south cerney in August in what ever state it is in. either way loads of progress is being made as quickly as possible and can't wait to start driving it around. 001.AVI

john1950
If you want to fit a water filter inhibiter in the system RR C range of engines suffer from liner corrosion. Especially if standing a lot I used to keep antifreeze in all year round. It is stilll my favourate engine exhaust note.

greyhound32122
thank you for your reply John1950 never knew they had such a problem will keep an eye on it. have run the engine 6 times for periods between 1 - 2 hours long and the water pump seals seem to have settled back in and doesn't leak any more so may have got lucky there. attleej
John is right about liner corrosion on Rolls Royce engines. With an Eagle, which is very similar to C range, it MUST be run with 50% antifreeze. Obviously good quality A/F. I am sure test running it without would not be a problem. Rolls also supplied a corrosion inhibitor for use in sunnier climes. John
