The jeep is now up and running following restoration, (not quit on the road though) but the alternator (conversion) is quite noisy, a 'whirring'. I dont remember this pre-restoration. Any suggestions? Could it have 'dried out'? is the belt a bit tight?. I wonder if its the bearings, but I would have noticed it before the resto I would think.

Try using a wooden dowel rod. Put the rod on the alternator then put your ear to the other end. Its remarkable how well you can pin down the specific area a noise is coming from. A bit of butter or magarine applied to the belt pulleys can also stop a lot of noise. I had a similar noise with Katy my WC54. That just needed a realingment of the tensioner bolt.
