Diana and Jackie
I believe CVRT steering calipers (and pads) are in fact Jaguar E Type calipers and pads - apart from the seals (not the piston boots) which are different for mineral oil. It is possible therefore, if I am correct, to fit E Type calipers (on an exchange basis?) and Landrover steering master cylinders, and not use mineral fluid in the steering but DOT 5 (silicon). sirhc
You are correct and I've heard of people doing this. You don't need to replace the calipers but can rebuild them with standard seals. I once bought a pair of cvrt steering calipers off a bloke who bought loads of them, put standard seals in and sold them to jaguar owners. I ended up with a bag of the seals he had taken out! teletech
The specialist houses seem to want £44 to over £100, add the shipping cost since I'm in the US and it's an item. Since the calipers are the same as an E-type I looked around and found a part number for E-type pads. I found some pads but I guess since they are Jag parts, shops still wanted some money for them. Taking that girling part number and doing a direct search for it turned up a Volvo application. I found some at classicgarage.com for $13US/set (item GI-GP83) that fit nicely and look identical to the ones that came out (well, apart from the rust and cruud). I suppose it is vaguely possible the compound on the CVR(T) pads is some special compound but I doubt it very much. Any reason I shouldn't use them? thanks,
sirhc
I've been using Jaguar steering pads for years with no problems.
Diana and Jackie
Go onto ebay - the pads there are dirt cheap or use the ones you found - they aren't special as Chris implies. The brake pads are another animal, made to an MOD spec as are the calipers. Probably easier to get new friction material bonded to them in the US. Similar for the handbrake bands. teletech
Are the calipers for the series 2 or 3 Jaguar? thanks,
Diana and Jackie
I matched it to an E Type. Diana Are the calipers for the series 2 or 3 Jaguar? thanks,
sirhc
A few years ago I found a bloke selling CVRT steering callipers on ebay as Jaguar parts. He had bought them from a surplus sale and was taking the seals out and replacing them with standard seals. He had one left which I bought from him, when I told him what I wanted it for he produced a bag of seals he'd removed and was about to throw away! teletech
I was wondering which e-type, the series 2 (1968-1971) or series 3 (1971-1975) as they are different calipers. I matched it to an E Type. Diana
teletech
I spent some time measuring and checking catalogs so here's what I found. My pistons were pretty rough as well, I found that XKS.COM sells new stainless steel pistons as well as rebuild kits and such. The large pistons are 2.248" OD, E-Type Series III V-12 , 420 Sedan , XJ-6 Series I , XJ-12 Series I Front the smaller ones are diameter: 1.5915" Applications: Series III E-Type V-12 , 420 Sedan , Series I XJ-6 and XJ-12. Also fitted to Aston Martin DB5, DB6, DBS; Alfa Romeo 2600 8/63-1968; Jensen Interceptor MK II & MK III 1973-1976; Lotus Elite 1974-1980; Rover 3500S 1970-1971; Misc. Mercedes. Since they normally use mineral oil I assume they don't run very hot in service? I'm thinking some nice stainless pistons and a powder-coat job on the caliper bodies would keep me from having to battle rust in the future. teletech
So, does this mean you have spares available? I have some brake-fluid seals but would rather keep mine original. sirhc
So, does this mean you have spares available?I have some brake-fluid seals but would rather keep mine original. With 3 vehicles to keep on the road I'm hanging on to spares like this so none for sale I'm afraid. Try Banisters for a set. Chris

teletech
I'd really love to get a copy of the parts-breakdown page for the calipers so I can add the part #s to the list of common parts I'm working on to go with the list of tools I've come up with. I know I should just spend the 75GBP+postage for the tome at some point but I'm trying to wait until I get a consolidated parts order coming as my last XMOD order was over 150GBP just in postage and it wasn't a large order... Thanks, P_
