RecyMech
Af,noon all. Anyone out there familiar with Saxon please? Two questions please..... We`re talking APC version here, in British army use, rather than the IS Patrol version. 1) Now, I know the Patrol version has Makrolon internal anti scab panels fitted.....& I'm told the APC version did'nt. I'm also told the APC version had bare steel walls internally & did not have any of the padding that you might find inside Saracen or FV432. Can anyone confirm that this is correct please....no padding or Makrolon in the troop carrier ? 2) Secondly, is it correct that only the Patrol version had the Cummins engine fitted & that all troop carriers just had the Bedford 500 normally aspirated (no turbo)? Thanks in advance for any input. Cheers Gents. H
fv1609
Howard if you were thinking of doing the Saxon Patrol Ambulance I have the illustrated parts book. It is quite detailed including the spall liners that I imagine would be GRP it would not be Makralon (the transparent shatter-proof stuff for riot shields & window protection). Also have quite a few shots of them at Ludgershall when they had just been issued.
RecyMech
Hi Clive, I'll drop you an e mail just to clarify some terminology to start with.......but please, if anyone else has info on the 'padding-v-no padding' thing I'd be interested on views & opinions. (I confess its the first time I've ever heard the term 'spall liners') Cheers all please keep it coming. Thanks. H
fv1609
Howard it turns out that I also have the parts list for the original Saxon (All variants) so that should clarify things even if there were mods, I have mods, general instructions & CES. BUT it is all in microfiche....so I may be a little while!
wally dugan
l have the SAXON all variants parts list on disc it shows a padding /trim kit for all variants as to the engine the only one shown is the BEDFORD 500 NONE TURBO this copy runs to 900 pages and was updated in 2001
Richard Farrant
When the Internal Security version of Saxon came in to service, it had the Cummins diesel in it. I think this was after Bedford ceased building trucks, so probably the reason for the change.
Hen Hunter
Not sure if you can see the interior on this Saxon - it's the command vehicle that has the Bedford engine, and the inside is padded with similar stuff you find in FV432's.
RecyMech
Hello Chaps,:-D Many thanks for everyones answers, much appreciated as ever. Clive has put me right on some of the terminolgy for the vehicle itself & for what I incorrectly referred to as "Makrolon" panels. (Learn something new every day:cool2:) Wally, thanks for confirming there were spall liners (something else new to me) kits for it. Will see if I can track down a parts list for it, sounds a useful doc to have. Or may have pester you & Clive for photocopies. :whistle:Thanks also for confirming it was the 500 Non Turbo. Richard, put like that it makes perfect sense. If Bedford were deceased then GKN had to source another engine. Cheers for the pic Hen Hunter. Certainly appears to have padding above the side entry door. Good start. Any more to offer....I'm all ears lads. Cheers for now......Howard.
