snowtracdave
Going to be changing the jeeps oil pump tomorrow - I seem to remember seeing a recommendation to pack it with Vaseline to facilitate priming . Any do's or don'ts from those in the know ?
0 snort
I bought a new pump from one of the usual suppliers, fitted it and it leaked around the big nut on the side of the pump, then found because of the poor casting it was impossible to tighten it. So look at it on the bench and make sure all is tight first. Schoolboy error on my part.:red:
0 Gordon_M
Grease or heavy oil. I'm sure you know that when you pull it you have to re-time the distributor drive stuff if you disturb it?
0 earlymb
This article might help you: http://www.1943mb.com/c-35-G503_WWII_Jeep_Oil_Pump_Distributor_alignment.aspx Good luck! :-)
0 snowtracdave
Sorry I didn't reply chaps , the link to the article was very helpful . Got the pump changed , all was hunky dory , timing fine , started & ran as well as normal ran fine for a good half hour or so and had much better pressure than for some time but then it died and on investigation obviously had no spark . This , it eventually transpired , was because the distributor shaft was not properly engaging in the oil pump shaft . I've now had it apart and back together a couple of times , everything seems to fit as it should but the two ends just do not engage as they should and seem to be around an eighth of an inch short of what they should be . I'm now stumped - Is there something blindingly obvious I'm missing ?
0 Pete Ashby
First things first, is the new oil pump distributor drive the same dimensions as the old one ? obvious question I know but worth checking side by side and measuring all the relevant dimensions also check that the drive slot in the pump is the same size as the drive tongue on the distributor. Let us know what you find Pete
