7.5 ton and towing

Question

If you are driving a 7.5ton truck on a car licence, can you tow a trailer as well? Assuming of course all gvw and trailer weights are within legal parameters.

I believe you can only go totally to 8.25 ton, which means a 750kg trailer and load .........which doesn't have to have brakes.

Can't find anything that applies for driving a 7.5ton truck towing a trailer, on a car licence obtained before 1980.

But then I could've missed it!

It's at the bottom of the page

Licences held before 1 January 1997

If you passed your car test before 1 January 1997 you are generally entitled to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8.25 tonnes MAM.

This is the weight of a vehicle or trailer including the maximum load that can be carried safely when it’s being used on the road.

You also have entitlement to drive a minibus with a trailer over 750kg MAM.

Also beware of the law when driving a twin wheel pick up or van ....like a twin rear wheel Transit' type vehicle :) .........you also need a Tacho fitted ...even if the trailer is empty.....

....strictly speaking ........you need a Tacho fitted even if you have a towbar fitted to such a vehicle and don't have a trailer attached at all......reason being..your vehicle is 'equipped with the means' to exceed it's stated Gross Vehicle Weight .......even if it is not actually doing so when you are stopped .....

... iffy business the Law is in this sort of area ..so be careful..... :)

I'm sure thats right, BUT you only have to use the tacho if towing for "profit or gain"......it all a very grey area.....

Thats the problem the law has become so dark that no one can quote it chapter and verse and be sure to be correct. even vosa can not answer questions
