as it is pre 1938 is to do with identifing a vehicle in a particular role
Not vehicle related Wally. This was from a set of three flags used by the British Army that might be used in certain circumstances outside the UK.

IVE GOT IT they are mobile traffic lights for when there is no electricity
Might be a bit difficult Wally when the lights change, hoisting the next flag.

If there were any flown at the roadside you might get more than you bargained for :-D

got to be officers latrines in the middle east as they are the only ones who wouldnt end up with a shovel and would like to know who is there
Not necessarily officers but British troops only David. No doubt there would have been further subdivision with notices, there are no official flags for this though. Not the Middle East but you are getting warm :D

We discussed this several years ago Clive. It was Seihks for religious reasons. I cannot recal the full explanation.
Oh no no Merlin they wouldn't have been allowed to use them. They had to use a flag with a different coloured disc.

Is it to do with the three main religions at that time HINDISM BUDDISM and SIKHISM and the cast system
Not specifically Wally. We seem to have started off earlier in the Middle East & have drifted into India, which is the correct area for the use of this flag.

Basically "native troops" black disc yellow flag - any theatre, "British troops" red disc yellow flag - but only when in India. Various religions & castes had different requirements & expectations for the processes that I won't go into in detail. Separation of 1 & 2, use of water rather than paper etc. All these sensitivities were encompassed in the Regulations.
