I was thinking about using a portable fuel tank, like you use on outboard boat engines, on my vehicles to save having to keep the main tank topped up and also to avoid the main tanks filling up with condensation.

It would also allow easy monitoring of fuel level etc.

Would it be too much of a fire risk?

Has anyone else done this?

If you search on 'spartan fuel tank' you will see a very neat installation done by Robin on his Spartan, so it can be done...

There are several size and types of tank available on ebay etc which would fit the bill, these are vented and safety approved so you should have no problem. I ran one on my Bedford MW and it worked fine. With a little thought you can hide it out of sight so it is not visible to the rivet counters. :-)

I was thinking of something easily portable, like the one you have on small boats.

They have have vents and quick release connectors etc. so I can move the fuel tank between vehicles easily.

I can then drain down all the main tanks and I will always have fresh clean fuel when I need to move anything about.

We have been using a jerry can with a generator attachment in our Spartan. The tank was full of water, sand etc when we got it. In the next few weeks I am going to mount a marine fuel tank a bit like Robin Craig did, I'll try and hide it so its not visible from the back door. This should give us much better range, I'm thinking something like 80 to 100 litres should do the trick.
