Rangie
Callsign IJ26 I have a Shorland which served in Northern Ireland with 9UDR from ’72 to ’82 and 5UDR from ’82 to ’83. Found during stripping works by the previous owner was its call-sign IJ26, painted in heavy letters on the roof. I have been trying to work out its unit, from information on the web and advice given to the previous owner. I have a friend who was on duty in Ireland at the time in the mid-70's but his recollection is sketchy, that or he'd rather forget it This is what I’ve come up with so far: The “I” stands for Infantry. The next letter equates to the Battalion Number: A – 1UDR – Antrim B – 2UDR – Armagh C – 3UDR – Down D – 4UDR – Fermanagh E – 5UDR – Londonderry F – 6UDR – Tyrone G – 7UDR – Belfast H – 8UDR – Tyrone J - 9UDR - Antrim K - 10UDR - Belfast L - 11UDR - Craigavon The first number refers to the Company: 1 - HQ Company 2 - A Company 3 - B Company 4 - C Company 5 - D Company 6 - E Company 7 - F Company The second number indicates the Platoon. So, as I understand it, call-sign IJ26 equates to the 6th Platoon, A Company of 9UDR, based in Carrickfergus..... How does this logic sound? Anyone with first-hand experience of the numbering system? Happy to be corrected/updated for reference purposes! :-D Alec.

However I cannot dispute that your vehicle carried it and that it tallies with the Battalion Number table you give. Everything else looks good to me, so I'll concur with your interpretation.
