Think there might be a clue there Clive.

Is it for pumping a fire extinguishing fluid into the front of the Land Rover in the event of an incendiary device going off under it?

Richard yes there was a clue but it will only seen to be a clue after the answer is found.

Its not a fire extinguisher system, it is something that might seem to be involved with that sort of situation but actually has a surprisingly different role.

If the drawing is reasonably accurate, the heavy screw caps and containers suggest contents under moderate to high pressure. And the pump looks just like one of those electric SU type fuel pumps suggesting low pressure.

Just thinking out loud.

I think it is one of those pumps, but the whole system is fairly low pressure. The tops on the cylinders are vented.

I keep thinking you would not use water in an SU pump, so with that in mind .......... a spirit like something like turpentine / white spirit to was the windscreens in the event of paint being thrown at them ?

But with vented tops? Would you want the fumes around the cab? Now two chemiclas? Could it be, an early instant tyre reinflation device?

He's off on the obscure hints again! So if it isn't for heating, is it for cooling? Or in cold conditions? What has come to mind is diicing fluids for a road railer.

No de-icing Tony.

Don't be misled by the name of the jpg :rotfl:

Well as it happens one of them does contain a solvent, but it is not for what has been suggested so far.

for decontamination in the event of a chemical attack?

Richard nope not that sort of thing. But in there you have touched on something that is in a convoluted way sort of allied to what this device could be associated with. I'm afraid that's not a very helpful clue, but when you get the answer it will show that it could be loosely associated.

CS gas dispenser?

Well done Tony it is indeed!

It was fed into the exhaust system & blown out of the back. The CS was dispersed so effectively as an aerosol that it was virtually invisible.

But what was the role of such a device?

Ingenious!

To clear a zone at the rear of the vehicle before deploying troops from within?

Alec.

to stop people following the vehicle and jumping in the back? :D

Nope. One of the features was that it could be operated discretely. But as intimated earlier it is not for the most obvious reason that one would immediately think of.
