snowtracdave
Can I ask all you guys a favour . A while ago we started to compile a register of surviving military ST's . Remember the funny little red Matchbox toys ? Always seemed a strange choice of vehicle to turn out as a toy but that's another story for somebody else to tell.....Anyway , that's where my interest in them started , then finding odd bits in 4x4 mags and such , then in more recent times the odd mention of finds in CMV . This lead to me buying my ST which was advertised as ex reserve stock but turned out to have been a range runabout for the RAE in Scotland & Wales . Through letters and whatnot I met up with the man whose father developed them for use by the RMC and he owns two , one fitted with a Wombat , the other undergoing an extensive rebuild now , we started looking out for and noting down other survivors . Sadly , so far , that only amounts to about ten . If , on your travels and explorations you happen to come across one , could you please let me know ? I don't intend using any information for commercial purposes or passing it on to anybody else . It's just for my own satisfaction . I'd love to have the serial number which should be on a small plate just by the back door and , better still , any reg no if any are still visible . thanks guys , any info will make an old anorak very happy . Guest matt
Hi Dave, A friend in Lincolnshire has/had one. It was in RM markings. I'll find out if they still have it. Matt.
snowtracdave
Thanks Matt - we knew there was one in that general area but don't have any details . I've also heard there may be another ex Royal Marines example in suffolk .

Thanks Lee , if Barry still has the same one it is the one which was shown in CMV some time back at Sennybridge TA camp & is one of the few surviving Falklands ST's , the other one he sold to Phil Chatfield & is being rebuilt . Poptopshed
If it carries on snowing at this rate i will be looking for a SnowTrac. Always fancied a Haggalund.
snowtracdave
Ironic - when it was snowing here this week I couldn't go out to play in mine as it's currently trapped in the garage with my dead Ford Falcon Ute and my box trailer in front of the door ! :shake:

snowtrac jim
Don't know if this is on your list already, but 52RN64 Chassis No.1575 is still alive but rather poorly. Having fun making bits.
jchinuk
I think there was a restoration of one in the old C4 series "Salvage Squad", though the programme was marred by artificial deadlines and staged incidents. jch
snowtracdave
Jim - will track down my list when I get a minute and check on that one . Thanks for the info in any case . JCH - Yes , Salvage Squad , the ST that was the chaps lifelong ambition to have and restore and which he sold as soon as it was seen on tv , Note I don't say finished as it was cobbled together enough to run for the tv show but a long way from being finished . As usual they had to over dramatise everything such as the cutting of the drive sprocket from the doner in the field when Alex McClarty actually had new ones in stock on the shelf . He was mucked about so much he refused to have anything further to do with them and Phil Chatfield was more than a little put out at the amount he put in to the production but received absolutely no credit for whatsoever . Amphibi boy
I remember seeing some in museums when i was younger, took many photos. I will have a look for them, see what there reg numbers are, it may also jog my memory from what museums they came from. I know one was in lincolnshire, it was a big shed, like it was in someones back garden, but had a nice collection of vehicles. Shaun
snowtrac jim
Thought you might like to see some pics of 52RN64. Does anybody know anything about this vehicle "in service?", also any sources of spare parts? Thank you. Have fun with your toys!
Gordon_M
AF Ross, Station Yard, Girvan was where that Army batch was disposed of, sure to be some bits left there .... Gordon
snowtracdave
What are you looking for Jim ? McClartys are still in business AFAIK , last I heard the company is now run by Alec's son . Engine is the industrial version of the Volks boxer flat four so plenty of specialists dealing in parts for those . Tyres are almost non existant these days - if you come across any for sale , buy them if they're good - particularly the small ones . Very occasionally they come up on E Bay . ironhorse
hi ive just joined hope your still looking for old snow tracs. if you are, i know of two. firstly, there is one in hendersons garage in alston, cumbria, near where i live. its been sat there a while and there is a makers plate on it. if you google image snowtrac, a flikr picture comes up of a green one in a bush, thats it. its about knackered and its almost constantly damp where its sitting. secondly, on my travels i came across one near achiltiebuie just north of ullapool in the scottish western isles. i spoke to the owner, a farmer, who used it for farm work and stalking. it was there june 2009 and will probably still be there. in fact, if you look for reiff on google maps, near achiltiebuie, and go right from the bit it says reiff, there is a track to a farm building. if you look on street view at the end of the road, you can see the snow trac. its green. he said he was looking to possibly sell it but it had been sat there ten years. i have 2 pictures of it too. what are parts like for these snow tracs? i was thinking of buying one or two but id need to know suppliers first much taa's
snowtrac jim
looking for drive sprockets. wheel rims. track parts. warning plate of dash. headlights and a wombat. FORUMS FORUM has lots of very good info but wrong side of pond for for parts .tyres seem to be a problem original sizes 600x100 and 400x4 6ply, this one will only be a toy so going to try vauxhall space saver 115x70x16 and moblity scooter 400x4 4ply tyres .if spockets not available i can make them out of u.h.m.w.p.e which is a hard plastic, or can cast them in ally. snowtracdave
McClarty's definitely still had new drive sprockets available last I heard . The tracks themselves are made from conveyor belt material , the ironwork might be a bit more problematic . Headlights are very similar to tractor lights so your local agricultural dealers can probably help track down something or have a trawl round a few autojumbles .
